Camp Updates

May 19, 2020

Dear Pok-O Family,

We’re reaching out today with news that we were hoping to not have to deliver.  We have made the difficult decision to suspend operations for all Pok-O-MacCready Camps for the summer of 2020. We have been keeping up to date with state regulations and recommendations from industry experts, analyzing what they all mean for camp. After digesting the guidance we have, along with the information we still just don’t know about this virus, we did not feel as though the camp experience was in line with our values of an exceptional Pok-O experience while keeping all campers and staff members safe and healthy.

Pok-O-MacCready Camps are a staple of the summer; one that cannot be replicated or replaced.  It will be the first summer since 1905 that campers will not be here.   Pok-O-MacCready had campers attend camp during World War 1 1917-1918, the Great Depression in the 1930’s, and World War II 1941-1945.  We know this will come with sorrow and anguish for many families; please know we experienced similar feelings in coming to this unfortunate decision, mostly from realizing we won’t get to greet you all upon arrival.  We encourage you to take time to talk about this as a family, and take a moment to reflect on all the great things about camp. It is okay to be sad and it is okay to be frustrated.

In addition to the decision to close, we felt it was also important to convey a message of hope, as Pok-O will be here waiting for you all in 2021!  We are already planning for Summer 2021, using the theme “Camp 2021, it will be a BLAST!”. The calendar for events and special activities will be out early Fall and will include Super Marcy, a reunion, and various other special events.  For our campers who were going to experience their last year as CIT or ADV this summer, we invite you to come back in 2021 so you are able to complete your camper years and experience everything that comes with your final summer as a camper.

We are overwhelmed with the support already offered to us by staff and alumni who are ready to take the next year to make camp programming and facility improvements. We will be sending out additional communication regarding refunds, credits, and your camp plans for 2021. We look forward to talking with all of you, working with you and doing all we can to keep the Pok-O Spirit alive!

Yours truly,

Jack Swan (President) and Kat Moser (Director)
