A Talented Camp. A Happy Camp.

Throughout the days of a Pok-O-MacCready Camp summer, all sorts of sounds are heard and types of play, seen.  The music here does not just belong to the birds. On camp, guitars are strummed, drums tapped, ukuleles plucked and all sorts of make-shift instruments played.  You will also see campers imaginations brought to life physically.  Costumes are a regular occurrence, not just at our upcoming Halloween Dance. Wacky random movement is all over and sometimes you find a group choreographing a dance.  Last night, campers were given the opportunity to showcase the wonderful skills, which may be overlooked in the day-to-day.

There are judges, but the Camp Talent Show is not a gruesome competition for a prize.  This event is for campers to share something special with the whole camp.  There was singing, dancing, skits, jokes, poems and magic tricks.  All ideas of talent aside, the campers who participated showed great courage.  It is not an easy task to get up in front of a crowd.

I was nervous, but I heard them clap so I kept going.” Patricius explained at breakfast.  He was a part of a performance by some Senior boys.  In it, he shared a dance with one of his counselors that showed off acrobatic-like skills as they swung each other around in circles.  The skit was finished with a happily-ever-after ending and a round of applause.  Annie said this was her favorite.

From the dining hall to the hammocks outside cabins, it is always remarkable to hear the soft melodies these MacCready campers can achieve. Eliza and Annie performed a duet of the song “House of Gold” with their ukuleles, last night.  Annie said she chose the song because they “have been playing it often and it has a great meaning.” The song is by the Twenty-Pilots and has a lyric that ties back with the happy ending of Patricius and the Senior boys’ skit.

“Let’s say we up and left this town,
And turned our future upside down.
We’ll make pretend that you and me,
Lived ever after happily.”

It almost seems coordinated. A song about a pretend happy- ending and a dance that leads to one. All for play and camp fun. Perhaps it is an unspoken Pok-O-MacCready Camper connection, but Patricius actually chose his dance for the senior skit because he taught his counselor Tristen it last year. Nevertheless, spirits were high last night.

This new Pok-O-MacCready week started off with sunshine and positivity.  Parents’ day is less than a week away.  Campers are having fun, but they will be very excited to see family this Saturday. So to prepare, please check out our visiting day post. Also check back every day to stay updated with Summer Camp News.
