A Different Kind of Hiking – Part 2

16_TrialWork05“Giving back to the mountains” is a motto amongst outdoor hikers and climbers, and it’s a practice that Pok-O-MacCready Camps follows.

On Wednesday, a group of girls, and one boy, of all ages, gave back in the form of doing trail work on nearby Pok-O-Moonshine mountain, assisting a not-for-profit group called The Friends of Pok-O-Moonshine.

“It was very good,” said Prisca.  “We split into groups and dug ditches— more than 30 of them!”16_TrialWork02

Why would kids spend their precious camp time performing manual labor?  “Because it sounded like it would be fun, and I like digging holes,” claimed Alexis, the youngest member of the group, who added that she was happy to help.

In fact, all of the kids were more than excited to pitch in.  Cole was the only boy on the trip:  “It was important work because we helped to push the water off of the trail.  It was an even amount of work and fun, since we also got to hike, and enjoy the nature around us.”
