History was made – and repeated – Wednesday night at the tribal council ring, as the Tuscarora 16_finalfire01captured the 2016 Tribal Games in a closely fought competition.

The victory culminated an impressive late surge that saw the tribe in blue win four of the last five contests, with one second place.  “When I woke up this morning I had my doubts whether we could win,”  said winning chief Sean T.  “At first I was scared, but then I thought that today is a new day, and we are starting from scratch.”  Sean becomes a winning Chief exactly 35 years after his father took the title for the same tribe.  “I’m aware of it and that is kinda cool,” he said, with emotion.

The win was the third in a row for the Tuskies; a feat that has never been accomplished in the16_finalfire04 history of tribal games.  Second place, a scant two and one-half points back, were the hard-luck Mohawk, who led the standings for much of the summer, but were denied the title for the 14th consecutive year.  “This one was tough,” said long-time tribe member Willow.

The final council fire also featured stories, and a presentation of the winning tribal project:  a dream catcher, won by the Tuscarora.  “This was a team effort,” concluded Sean, “and I couldn’t have done it without (Tuscarora Sachem) Anika, who really pushed me, and all of us to be better.”
