Tribe Time

Pok-O-MacCready biggest event – in terms of passion and intensity – for the first session is undoubtedly Tribal Games.

Wednesday night’s opening council kicked off the 2016 event.  The five nations entered the council along with all of the new braves (first-year campers) who were eager to learn their tribal assignments.  “It was good.  It was funny, but I learned stuff and was happy to be picked by my tribe,” said Ethan M, who was chosen to be part of the Onondaga.

Another new Onondaga, Kiki, said “I thought it was a cool set-up and really interesting.”…

As excited as the new kids were to see where they were going, the returning campers were just as eager.  “I liked it.  It was fun to see where all the new kids went,” was the comment from Bridget, a returning member of the two-time defending champion Tuscarora.

Aside from team selection, and a rundown of the Tribal Games schedule, the campers were16firstfire_08 instructed on the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship, and told stories about Iroquois tradition and history.

The games are now under way (see schedule) with the focus being not only on the Tuscarora chances for an unprecedented three-peat, but also the Mohawk, who are trying to end a 13-year drought of having not won the overall title.  The two oldest returning braves are confident “I feel good about our tribe,” said Niall, while 2015 Mohawk Chief Noah M went even further:  “I think we got it in the bag!”
