Another Excursion to the Big Lake

It was another spectacular day of scenic beauty and maritime intrigue, as a boat load (literally!) 15_maritime07of campers headed on to Lake Champlain for a history and geography lesson-cruise.

“It was amazing,” raved Ryan R.  “We got to do stuff we don’t usually do at camp.  I learned a lot about our local geographic area.”

The boat left port in Westport, NY and made it’s way to Basin Harbor, VT, exploring the lake, some islands, and the sites of several shipwrecks.  (Read a detailed account from the previous trip HERE and click the read more link for more on today’s trip).

“I didn’t know what a ROV was,” said Annie C, “until this trip.  It’s an underwater camera and15_maritime10 we saw it go down and take this picture of the ship wreck.”

The kids also spent time ashore, having a buffet lunch and exploring a museum.  Prisca was impressed.  “I learned that they also boat on the ice.  They have an ice boat and they are able to sail on Lake Champlain in the winter.”

All told, 22 campers got to share in the experience, joined by staff members, including camp director Brian DeGroat, and waterfront director Caitlin Livsey.
