The Pok-O-Moonshine senior section had it’s annual slice of Americana Wednesday night, as the campers traveled to Burlington to watch minor league baseball. The Vermont Lake Monsters, an affiliate of the Oakland A’s, hosted the Staten Island Yankees in a Class-A rookie league game.
For some kids, mainly the foreign campers, this was a first-time experience. “At first, I didn’t understand it but, after awhile, I was following what was happening,” said Papouto, from Haiti.
Like all of minor league baseball, the experience is about more than just the game. “We went to the ‘Fun Zone'”, reported Noah. “It was sort of like a mini trampoline park. It was so fun!”
Four campers were chosen to take part in one of the between innings on-field promotions: Build A Burger.
“We got into bun suits,” said Dean, who took part along with John L, Laurence and Kevin Q. “There were condiments on the ground, which we collected.”“At the end,” added John. “I did a belly flop on to the other bun.” (Photo, right and Video below)
With all of the side attractions, you would think the score didn’t matter. For the record, the Lake Monsters, scoring six runs in the first inning, went on to defeat the Yankees 9-6. And for Jarod, it was interesting. “I mainly just sat and watched the game, and I liked it. The food was good, too!”
