SAY “CHEESE”! Farm adventure at North Country Creamery

DSC_1130This morning, campers enrolled in our Homesteading program were treated to a special trip to the North Country Creamery and farm.  Owned and operated by Ashlee Kleinhammer & Steven Googin, the North Country Creamery is a 100% grassfed, Non-GMO, & Animal Welfare Approved dairy in Keeseville, New York.

Ashlee was a wonderful guide around the farm and creamery, and our campers got to visit the cheese cave, tour the milking room, and even meet the cows out on the pasture!  Our campers were curious and asked very good questions about the creamery’s operations while learning all about the entire process, from animal care to milking to cheese-making, and beyond!  We couldn’t resist buying a few blocks of the lovely aged cheeses at their farm-store for the Homestead campers to enjoy later in class.

DSC_1048A HUGE Thank you to Ashlee and the North Country Creamery for such an excellent visit!  They produce and sell an array of farmstead cheeses, creamline yogurts, & RAW milk.  All of their products are made exclusively with the fresh milk from their Milking Shorthorn and Jersey cows, and other ingredients are limited to cultures, local herbs, maple syrup & organic extracts–no added colors or stabilizers.

Pok-O-MacCready’s Homesteading program allows campers to learn pioneer living skills from the 19th century all the way up to modern homesteading techniques.  This summer, campers have made their own jam, candles, carded & spun wool for weaving, tended to their garden, cared for the Homestead farm animals, and learned how to cook at the hearth.  Maybe cheese-making is in their future?
