“The traditional start to a new beginning”

Justin Hilborne: 2nd year counselor

2015 summer staff began arriving at camp as early as May and, since then, have been engaged in a variety of activities, seminars, and classes, all geared towards orienting them to precamp08best performing their summer roles.

Official pre-camp orientation got under way June 19; the counselors have busied themselves in their sections; class areas; first aid; CPR; lifeguard training; wilderness trips; meetings; and fun games, to name just a few of the items on the busy schedule.

“I feel that the summer staff appears to be unified and supportive”, said Abby Davis, a third year staffer, serving as Intermediate section head for her second straight summer.  “It’s a really good sign for a groundbreaking summer!”

While Davis’s perspective comes from past years at camp, the experience is much different, and occassionally nerve-racking, for rookie counselors.  “It’s been fun,” said Nina Zmudinska, precamp01a first-year riding instructor from Poland.  “At the same time, I am excited and nervous.  It’s my first time at camp, and in the USA.”

“I really like how everyone I work with has the same sense of humor,” reports new staff member Jacob Pearson.  “It makes it a lot easier to get along with people.”

Mostly, pre-camp is about gathering together to share in a mood and passion that soon will be passed along to the campers.  “It’s great to reunite with old friends, meet new ones, and all be able to laugh at the same jokes,” said Hilborne.  (See gallery, below, for more pre-camp pics)
