Three New Rowboats Presented

As is custom during Pok-O-MacCready’s five year reunions, distinguished camp family members were honored in 2014, as part of camp’s 110th reunion ceremonies.  All three honorees – Ken Ryba, Sharp Swan, and Marge Thornton – now have rowboats named for them.

KEN RYBA first came to camp in 1979 and, for the past 35 years, has served as counselor, director of boating, head of wilderness, and outdoor education instructor, to name just some of his roles.  Ryba’s value to camp extends far beyond his job description, as he has spent countless hours of personal time working on both camp programs and facilities.

SHARP SWAN has been part of camp since he was nine days old, in 1955.  As a camper, counselor, section head, headmaster, and director of both summer camp and outdoor ed., Sharp’s biggest contribution to Pok-O-MacCready has been his passion, spirit, and power to inject those around him with the Pok-O spirit.

MARGE THORNTON has been a stable fixture in the Pok-O kitchen for over a quarter-century.  While loyally serving under a number of different cooks and kitchen managers, the Willsboro, NY native has also been called on several occasions to take charge of the kitchen.  Her calm presence and upbeat attitude has rubbed off on hundreds of campers and staff.

Thornton was presented her boat by camp owner Jack Swan, at the 2014 summer staff dinner.  In a display of symmetry, Sharp Swan and Ken Ryba had their boats dedicated at the reunion banquet.  Unaware of the fact that they would be receiving a boat themselves, both Swan and Ryba were asked to give the speech presenting the boat to the other.
