“Only one point separates first, from fourth place in the overall standings!”

That was the pronouncement by ‘The White Man’, to gasps and awed silence, during Wednesday night’s final council 3fire.  ONE POINT!  That’s one place in one event.  The difference between finishing fourth, instead of third, in “Sink the Bismark!”

The closest previous overall Indian Games Result was in 1995, when one and a half points separated first from third.  Several times in the past, there had even been some ties for the overall championship.  But one point, between four tribes was shocking; a result of a hard fought Indian Games competition staged between evenly matched tribes.

The Cayuga came out on top of this historical contest, with the Tuscarora tying defending tribal champion Seneca for second, and the Onondaga right behind.  The Mohawk, without a victory since 2003 finished in fifth.

13finalfire07“I’m really, really happy,” gushed Cayuga Medicine Man Adam D.  “It’s my first time winning it all.  We did it with teamwork and great leadership.”  “It’s awesome!  I’m so happy,” claimed Clarisse.

As for other reasons for victory:  “Everybody took responsibility,” said GeorgeBrodie added, “We never gave up.”

The victory was especially sweet for Cayuga sachem Elizabeth S, who finished runner-up in the same role in 2012.  “I thought we could win, and that we might win, but as results were announced for today’s events, I had my doubts.  So, I’m extremely exhilarated!”
