Pok-O opens Intercamp sports season with a victory

13LincBase112Pok-O-Moonshine’s younger boys baseball team approached Tuesdays home game determined to win the first of two matches. After the usual year-long wait, the fierce camp rivalry reignited on the MacCready field once again.

Dean P. came out to the mound as starting pitcher looking to give his side a strong defensive game. However, within the first couple minutes, Lincoln had the bases loaded and a good chance to take the early lead. With only one out, Dean fired back, striking out two and escaping the inning without giving up any runs.

“There was a lot of pressure to start off the game, “ said starting pitcher Dean. “But all I needed to do was to throw strikes, and it worked.”

The game would continue to fall in Poko’s favor, after a leadoff homerun by Adam D. “ When asked about his 13LincBase113miraculous homer, Adam responded by saying, “I can’t believe it, now I’m even more confident that we can win this game.”

Shortly after, Jackson K. added on to the lead with an RBI single, allowing Makalu G. to score, Poko up 2-0.

Later on, in the second inning, Lincoln bounced back with a run of their own, after a strategic sacrifice bunt, the third base runner quickly glided home, reducing the deficit to a one run game.

But Lincoln’s little comeback was short lived after Dean drives in another run with a RBI single. Lincoln would soon score again making the game 3-2, Poko but a sacrifice hit by Wyatt L. allowed Andrew M. to punch the lead back to 2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Adam seemed to solidify the victory with a 2 RBI double advancing Poko to a 6-2 le13LincBase111ad.

In the shadow of defeat, Lincoln hung on scoring two runs in the fifth with a home run of their own and then scaring Poko in the sixth with runners on second and first.

Jackson entered the game, looking to close out the victory but, with three crucial strikeouts to end the game, he closed out Poko’s 6-4 win.

“ I think it’s super cool,” said Jackson after his outing. “We were so close to blowing the lead but, in the last inning, it all came together and we succeeded.”

“We hit the hittable pitches and were patient in the batters box and on the field,” Coach Mark Balderston mentioned.

“The entire team showed true class and sportsmanship,” Coach Matt Shayne stated after the victory. “With hard work and good pitching we can beat Lincoln on Friday.”

Friday’s rematch will be held at Lincoln.  (Story by, OM: AC)
