Mountains Beyond Mountains: summer camp’s local treasures

Wilderness trips departed camp in full force this weekend and, even better, they all returned!indrock1

Seriously, the weekend weather was the finest so far this summer camp season, and campers had a chance to climb Forty-Sixers, rock climb, and go boating.

One always popular trip is the camp-out at nearby Indian Rock.  Located across Long Pond from Pok-O-MacCready, Indian Rock features a lean-to for shelter, tent spots, a cooking area, fire circle, and an incredible view.  The Pioneer section, camp’s youngest, spent Saturday night there.  For some, such as Corey, this was a first time adventure.  “I’ve camped out before, in my back yard, but this was more intense.  “Pretty fun,” said Austin.  “I was up for two hours listening to moaning and growling.  It was, at the same time, suspenseful and awesome.”

Corey and Asplitrock3ustin especially enjoyed the food.  “We had Mac and Cheese with Spam; marshmallows, oatmeal and hot chocolate.”

Also located near camp – on Lake Champlain – is Split Rock Mountain.  A group of girls spent Sunday afternoon hiking to this scenic lookout with the added bonus of being joined by camp Director Missy Livsey, and wilderness program director Ken Ryba.  “It was a great time,” said LIvsey.  “Not just being able to get out of camp, but the walk in, and the view.  Plus we had a great group of girls!”

All MacCready campers were required to pick one out of camp trip Sunday; from this point forward, trips are optional.
