Just Checking

And to think, the kids just left school behind.  Still, the first full day of summer camp feat13testing05ures plenty of tests, and checks designed to insure camper’s safety, skill level and activity assignments.

At the health offices, nurses have been performing head checks, as well as checking camper’s weight and general condition.  “The campers all just had physicals at home,” said health director Kathy Gigantiello. “However, we like to monitor their weight and habits in order to insure their consistent overall health.”

Elsewhere in camp, the kids are all taking swim tests for the purpose of scheduling them in the proper skill level class.  Virtually every camper must take instructional swimming out of the gate but, in time, a large number of them will successfully pass the course.  Additionally, certain levels of swimming will dictate which boats campers may operate on their own.

Also today, the camp horses are getting their first in-camp summer workout as all riders are being tested in both basic and advanced equestrian skills.  “This is important,” says riding director Sue Bagli, “not only to give them the proper instruction, but for classifying them at the summer horse shows.”

Several dozen campers also turned out for auditions for the 2013 camp musical, Grease.  Parts will be assigned soon, followed by the start of rehearsals. “Summer sun, something’s begun…”
