Family Camp: Reviving the classic summer vacation
Put your hand up if you remember playing with an Etch-a-sketch in the back seat of the family station wagon on a long road trip. The sweet simplicity of family time on those long trips talking, singing, telling jokes…it seems to be somewhat lost in this age of air travel and all-inclusive resorts. The antidote? Family Camp. Summer camps for families are helping to revive the classic American family vacation. Where else can you get a 5-day all-inclusive family vacation for 4 people with all meals, lodging, activities, and special programs included for just over $1,000? It’s not Cancun…it’s the Adirondacks.
Okay, I know what you’re thinking: the phrase “family camp” paints an image of an over-caffeinated camp director making announcements through a megaphone (with more energy than should be legal at 8 in the morning). Family camp at Pok-O-MacCready is anything but! Family Camp is about rekindling the family bond while having the choice to participate in a variety of programs that appeal to both parents and kids. No macaroni necklaces, no kum-ba-yah circle…just a casual, laid-back Adirondack weekend for you to spend quality time together with your family and friends.
Pok-O-MacCready Camps, in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, has been offering Family Camp for decades. Family owned and operated since 1905, “Pok-O” is located on a beautiful lake and is comprised of 300 acres of waterfront, forest, fields, and hiking trails. Just relaxing at the camp itself can be therapeutic: smelling the fresh air, taking a dip in the cool water, watching the sun set over the mountains down by the lake; that alone is worth the trip. What sweetens the Family Camp deal is the choose-your-own-adventure type of schedule, unique activities for both kids & adults, day trips into the Adirondack Mountains, all-you-can-eat comfort food, and unique evening programs and events that are sure to get the entire family moving/dancing/crying-with-laughter.

9. Family Camp offers flexible accommodation options.
Do you need a cabin with electricity? An attached bath? Modern Cabin versus a rustic cabin? Let us know on your registration form. The staff tries to accommodate all Family Camp requests. Please note: it’s Family Camp, so all families stay together in their cabins (i.e. children don’t stay in cabins separate from their parents.) Submit your registration early to get a better chance at securing your preferred accommodations.
8. You can bring your dog to Family Camp
…because dogs are family, too!
7. Do you have fussy eaters in your family? Not an issue at Family Camp.
For parents of young children, meals can sometimes be stressful. Leave the hard part to the Family Camp staff. “Pok-O” provides buffet breakfast each day (on a rolling schedule so you can wake up whenever you like!), as well as carefully-planned lunches and dinners that offer a variety of food options. This ensures all Family Camp guests will be happy picking and choosing the foods that appeal to them. There’s also a cart in the dining hall that has fresh fruit available at all times in case you need to re-energize. Fuel the fun!
Do as much – or as little – as you like. Family Camp has a flexible schedule that allows you to sleep in (if the kids will let you!), join whichever activities suit you, and take a break when you need to…which leads us to our next point:
5. Family Camp encourages “ME time” as well as “WE time”.
Let the kids go rock-climbing with the other kids & Family Camp staff while you relax by the lake in an Adirondack chair and (gasp!) open that book you’ve been meaning to read all summer.
The Family Camp session allows kids to socialize with other children their age, try new things, and can be a valuable experience in helping them to become more independent. The staff at Poko often finds that children who have attended a Family Camp session make a smoother transition when they return as an overnight camper for the full summer camp session the following year. So, if you’re thinking about sending the kids off to camp in the future, Family Camp will help you get off on the right foot.
3. the Pok-O-MacCready Camp belief is that you have to “Unplug” in order to “Connect”.
It’s important to take breaks from work and the stresses of everyday life. “Pok-O” is proud to be an “unplugged” camp (sorry/not sorry). Because of the Camp’s location in the mountains, you’ll find that there is no cell reception at camp or internet access. However, if you REALLY need to get access, the Family Camp staff can make recommendations for you that are within a 2-5 minute drive away. (Remember, if you need to leave camp, you must make sure your children are being supervised by a legal guardian at all times.)
2. Because a week where you don’t have to worry about the details is PRICELESS!
The Family Camp staff will focus on the logistics, activities, and preparing the meals…you just focus on quality time with family & friends.
In ten years’ time, do you want your kids to recount their summer vacation memories with “Hey, do you remember that time we got stuck in the airport in Houston for 9 hours and I made a hat out of paper towels?” or would you rather them say something like “Hey, remember that time at Family Camp when we went canoeing and dad dropped his paddle in the water and he couldn’t reach it and we were laughing so hard that we almost tipped over?”
So what do you think….do you need better summer vacation stories?
