Welcome to the Pok-O-MacCready Outdoor Education Center!

outdoor education center mission statement

PMOEC is located on over 300 acres of land with a beautiful Adirondack lake surrounded by forests, trails and wilderness. The Center is within an hours drive of the High Peaks Adirondack Region, three miles from Lake Champlain and across the lake from Burlington, VT. For the past 50 years our mission at the Pok-O-MacCready Outdoor Education Center has been to create and encourage a sense of awe in the presence of nature, to build self confidence, to nurture self worth and to promote teamwork, communication and tolerance for students of all ages.

WHAT WE DO

We pursue excellence in our field through the four pillars of our educational philosophy – Teambuilding, Natural Science, Living History, and Wilderness Adventure. In addition to our 4 main curriculum we also utilize the use of the state of the art Crux Rock Climbing Center

Each year, more than 50 schools bring groups to the Pok-O-MacCready Outdoor Education Center. These groups come from all over the Northeast and Quebec. PMOEC is open for the duration of the school year (September through June) and offers programming for students from elementary age through college level. A diverse staff of experienced outdoor professionals guarantees each group an educational, fun, and memorable experience. Many of our schools and colleges return year after year, some for over 20 years!

Please call our PMOEC Director at (518)963-7967 to request a Program Guide which includes a full list of programs, detailed facility information and more to help plan your schools next trip!

TEAMBUILDING: The center offers several classes and activities that teach communication, confidence, leadership, and other important skills. Choices include student favorites such as our Low Ropes and Teams Courses.

NATURAL SCIENCE: Hibernation, food chains, and watersheds are only a few of the numerous topics covered in our science classes. Learning about nature is exciting and engaging in classes that provide plenty of hands-on opportunities and active exercises for demonstrations.

LIVING HISTORY: Travel back in time at our 1812 Homestead and let history come alive. Learn from Master MacCready in our school house, practice pioneer skills, and role play in our Under Ground Railroad and Revolutionary War demonstrations.

WILDERNESS ADVENTURE: Whether skiing around campus, canoeing on Long Pond, hiking the four Pok-O-Patch mountains, or heading into the wilderness for rock climbing, participants will practice new techniques while exploring the Adirondack region.

Pok-O-MacCready’s HISTORY

In 1905, Dr. Charles Robinson founded Camp Pok-O-Moonshine for boys, on the southern shore of present day Long Pond. The camp expanded throughout the years, and in 1967 Camp MacCready for girls was created. In the 1970s, the two camps were merged together to become one co-ed camp named Pok-O-MacCready. Pok-O-MacCready Outdoor Education Center was started in 1974, utilizing the extensive educational and residential facilities year-round.  Since then, the center has grown and worked with numerous schools and groups. The programs continue to teach great lessons and skills while providing exciting new experiences.
