News about & Correspondence from Camp Alumni

I remember fondly the summers of 1970 and 1971 when at Poko.   Although our family moved from Lowville in 1977, we return on a regular basis and catch up with folks like the Lynch family.  I know a number of the Lynches carried on the Poko tradition.

We now live in in Overland Park, Kansas (suburb of Kansas City) where I work as CFO for Russell Stover Candies (we sell Whitman's Chocolates as well...hope you enjoy them on occasion!).   I miss the Adirondacks, but one of our sons (we have been blessed with six children) attends the University of Colorado and loves to hike, camp, etc.   He spent two summers at Camp Mondamin...located in the Smoky Mountains (western North Carolina) and is very similar to Poko and Beaver Camp.

We are today in New Orleans visiting our younger daughter (freshman at Tulane), but I wish we could be in the North Country.  Our best to all and, if anyone recalls this former Beaver Camper, a hearty hello.

Regards,

Dave Shapland

Dear Sharp,

I don't know if you'll remember me- you'll have to think back awhile- but my name is Tony Rowan and I was a camper at Pok-O in 68-69. I can't remember other names except for my friend John Simmons. But we went on the web last week and saw not only are you camp director, but that your father, Jack, is still on staff. He was director when I was there. I didn't think the camp might even exist anymore, and come to find it's still in your family's hands. Wow- what a tribute to your care and professionalism. I married in my 40s so now in my 50s I have three young children. Perhaps in another year or two, if our budget permits, they too could experience camp life at Pok-O-MacCready. I loved the hiking, camping, riflery, and archery the camp offered, though unfortunately I never got my 46er accomplished. I made 36, but missed out on the last ten. I always hoped I'd make it back there when I was younger, but I never did. But who knows- I still may one day. Anyway I just wanted to say hello, and perhaps we'll meet again if I can bring my kids to camp there. Say hello to your father, Jack, for me. My wife and I celebrated our 1st year Anniversary at Niagara Falls, so on our way there we may have passed by or near your camp area.

I wish you all the best.

I'm BenMandelcurrently living in Madison Wisconsin and working as a Reconstructive Surgery Fellow. I married Brinnon Garrett in 2006. She's a native Oregonian who graduated from Colorado College and then spent several years in the Peace Corp in Honduras. She's also an avid outdoors-woman and I'm dying to get her out to the ADKs. Perhaps this summer. We had our first child this past October (Sam). He's doing well, packing on the pounds! (Give him a few more years and we'll send him your way!)Miss Long Pond more than I can express!

Cheers,
Ben Mandel

Dear Swan family.

For some odd reason, today thought about Poko-O-Moonshine, and decided to google you, to see if you still existed, I'm so glad you still do.
I don't know if you remember me, Paul Poincot, from Venezuela, went 4 summers (1964-1968) , and hey.... became your best archer then.
First time we ( my brother Freddy and I) went, Mrs Swan and the Col. pick us up at the NYC airport and drove us all the way to the camp, during the trip, recall seeing and counting for the first time a 100 wagon train.
The 2nd time, we added a friend of mine Luca Bentivoglio.
3rd time, Luca, my stepbrother ( Andrea) and I, and the 4th time just Andrea and me.
For some reason, we got to stay longer than the rest of the campers, enjoyed it to the fullest ( freedom ) and the basketball collage trainings.
David, do you remember in 1968 waking up at 5 am, because a very ugly smell came about  and I guess you did figure out it was my sneakers US Keds placed in the fireplace. By then your Dad ( Jack ) was driving us to the airport )

My best regards to you all.

Paul

I live outside of San Francisco, in a town called Pacifica, about 10 blocks from the ocean. I moved here almost 13 years ago. I've been a graphic designer/animator my entire career. I'm not married and have no kids. I would love to find some people from camp, Andy Caplan and a few others. I have bumped into Joe Conte and Michelle Lee, both are living here in California. My contact information is jennifer@wanderermedia.com.

My brother Dave is happily married to a wonder woman, has two beautiful kids in Bozeman, Montana. He is running his own business.

Best regards,
Jennifer Wanderer
