“The Camp Song”

Alumnus Composes tune based on Pok-O Experience

PeterKatzBack in the early 1990’s, young teenager Peter Katz was starring in the Pok-O-MacCready stage productions of “Grease” and “Little Shop of Horrors”.

Katz, a native of Montreal, used his experience at camp to launch a highly successful performing and song writing career.  He is a recent winner of the CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award and the Grand Prize Winner of Toronto's IndieWeek.  Recently, Katz was commissioned by the International Camping Fellowship to write a song for the International Camping Conference that was just held in Quebec City.

“I used a lot of 'Poko' memories as inspiration,” said Katz in an Email to camp, “and thought you might like to hear it. Please feel free to share it with anyone, it's a free download at www.peterkatz.com/camp.html

The Camp Song

How can I explain
What I take away
When the autumn falls
And we go our separate ways

What is it exactly
How can I describe
All that I discovered
By that fireside

Well some things aren’t defined
Yeah some things they’re just right

‘Cause it’s more than the green of trees
It’s more than the summer breeze
The smell of rocks and water
Washing over me
It’s more than the orange fire
It’s more than the fishing wire
It’s more than the cabin walls
Or that morning bugle call

It’s something you can’t touch
But you can always hold

Lying in that field
Sleeping with the sky
Something bound between us
Without us knowing why

And from that moment on
Nothing could undo
The feeling of belonging
That would always be true

Well some things don’t need words
Yeah some things they just work

‘Cause it’s more than the green of trees
It’s more than the summer breeze
The smell of rocks and water
Washing over me
It’s more than the orange fire
It’s more than the fishing wire
It’s more than the cabin walls
Or that morning bugle call

It’s something you can’t touch
But you can always hold
And maybe it’s not much
But it’s worth more than gold

Yeah it’s worth more than gold
And I will always hold
