Report:
On a sunny afternoon we arrived at the herd path off route 73 going towards the Dixes. Surprisingly we encountered two of Kenny’s Friends, Chris and Allison. We packed in two miles to the campsite. We hurriedly set up our tents only to realize that camping at this site was illegal. We moved our tents up a ways and decided to camp there. However we cooked our food at the first campsite. Later upon finishing dinner, we went to bed.
At five in the morning we drowsily awoke. For breakfast we scarfed down Spam, hot chocolate and oatmeal. At six-thirty the hike began. The first mountain we hiked was East Dix, on which we split up with Kenny’s friends. We struggled up a big rock slide which was challenging. Then we moved on to South Dix, the easiest of them all. From there we began to hike up Macomb. After we reached Macomb we hiked back to South Dix and then began the long journey up Hough. Shockingly we ran into people who had worked at Pok-O-MacCready. They will be coming to the camp reunion. Onward we went towards Dix, climbing over a few bumps and finally reaching our goal. All five 46ers had been completed! So finally we bushwhacked for a couple of hours, back to the herd path which we followed back to camp; through the rain.
Once we arrived at the campsite we ate a quick dinner and fell asleep. The next morning we awoke, ate breakfast, finished packing our stuff, and left. We packed back out to the road and waited for the maroon van to pick us up.
We really enjoyed the trip and couldn’t be happier that we had such great trip leaders as Sarah Low and Ken Ryba.
