”SUPER” TIME ON THE TRAIL
Marathon Trips Heading out; Coming homes
Super Marcy headlines final week of Special Events
It is a tradition dating back to the very first summers at Pok-O: The “Super Marcy”. Back in the early days it was called “Fast Marcy”.
What is Super Marcy? In short, it’s an homage to the early days of camp. Days when there were no motorized vehicles and campers and staff had to walk from camp, to the summit of
the state’s highest mountain, and then walk back.
Every five years, the wilderness program at Pok-O-MacCready returns to it’s roots, offering up the Super Marcy to all interested. This year, four trips
were sent out. Trip #1 was led by Super Marcy veterens Phil Corell, Sharp Swan and Miriam Shaffer and consisted mainly of campers from the boys senior
section. The group covered nearly 70 miles, much of it in the rain, finishing their quest Thursday evening. Corell has now completed the Super Marcy seven times.
Trips #2, #3 and #4 are still “out on the trail”. Trip #2 is a special one: The Pok-O Advanced Section is covering the entire route to marcy... AND BACK TO
CAMP. They are expected late this evening. Group #3 marks the second time that Camp MacCready has sent out an all-female trek, while Trip #4 is also
pushing the envelope with campers as young as ten, by far the youngest to attempt this great wilderness challenge.
PROGRESS REPORT: The Advance Section was spotted last night in Keene Valley, having climbed Marcy but with still 27 miles left to return to camp..... The All-girls trip was enjoying a beautiful
Wednesday afternoon on top of Whiteface Mountain in good spirits and ahead of schedule..... The youngsters of trip #4 had a solid opening day march Wednesday, arriving at their campsite by mid-afternoon.
CAMP FINSIHES THE 46
In what has become another great summer tradition, the campers of Pok-O-MacCready have collectively completed the Adirondack 46ers for the 9th consecutive summer. Pok-O-MacCready has
sent over 50 trips into the High Peaks with two campers- Benn Singer and Luke Bucciarelli- finishing their individual 46. (see full list). With the successful summiting of Mt. Colden by a coed group of Seniors and
Highlanders, camp has enjoyed another “46er summer”
HIGH STAKES at ROBINSON HALL
For those not choosing to head into the woods, there’s still plenty going on at camp. Last night, the 100th annual Pok-O-MacCready Casino Night was
held, with campers trying their luck and using their skill at poker, black jack, craps, roullette, bingo, dice games, mini-putt, horse races and the stock market.
Some campers walked away with several million dollars of “Pok-O money”, while all campers enjoyed the cookies, candy, brownies, cake and beverages.
