GETTING INTO THE GROOVE
Final 4-Week Horse Show, Blue and Gray, Record Breaking are highlights
Willow Hill Horse Show, Sunday 25th July by Catherine Harrison, Riding Instructor
Pok-O-MacCready riders again enjoyed beautiful weather for the third show day of the summer. Last week campers were offered another chance to compete at Willow Hill. For four
weekers, this was the last chance of the summer to compete. As a result, sign-ups were plentiful and around 35 campers took part.

The first class of the day in the show ring was the leadline division. A delighted Mustafa Ahmed riding Del, with expert leading by Montana
Machson, took first place. Paige Gigantiello was awarded second place for a great round on Honey.
Meanwhile in the jumping ring, the Low Hunter class was taking place. Jess Marx looked as professional as ever on Sporty and managed to earn a 3rd place in the pleasure division- quite an
accomplishment considering the high standard of competition from Willow Hill riders. Liana Blum riding Lucky Charm was placed 3rd, 4th and 1st in the three divisions of the class, earning a well-deserved
reserve champion award. Ariel Millhauser and Blake Artuso were both subject to a last minute change of plan- Blake into the class and
Ariel onto a different horse. Both rode very well nonetheless. Montana also produced an excellent performance on Del, usually a difficult ride and was encouraged
by enthusiastic cheering from Matty Graff!
The walk Trot under ten class was next in the show ring, in which Emily Poirier and Pal proved to be an excellent match, winning the pleasure division and being placed 2nd in both the equitation (won by
Julia Latham on Hickory) and command (won by Olivia Gold on Tucker) divisions. Emily was thrilled to then be awarded Champion,
while Julia and Hickory took Reserve Champion. Four weeks of lessons together paid off for Megan Raffle and Saint, who were
Champions of the walk trot eleven and above class, after winning the command division. First place in the equitation division was awarded
to Teonna Turner, riding Clyde, who went on to become Reserve Champion of the class. In the twelve years and above section of the
walk trot class, Champion was taken by Morgan Robare riding Joe, with Stephanie Roy on Honey close behind as Reserve Champion. Jamie Konowitz could not stop smiling after winning
Reserve Champion in the Walk Trot Canter class with her favorite pony, Honey. Heidi Taggart and
Carli Newbert also rode well, while the other Newbert twin, Jaclyn, demonstrated excellent accuracy with Mikey.
In the final class of the day- cross rails- Christie Civetta and Hickory triumphed winning both the
equitation and command divisions, earning themselves a place as cross rails Champion. The judges
chose Isabel Zahn as Reserve Champion after three excellent rounds with Clyde. Colleen Dunn impressed both her instructor and the judges with her control of Mikey.
All competitors enjoyed the day and we, the instructors, could not have felt more proud seeing
dozens of ribbons and medals hanging in the fire circle during the final vespers service of the four
week session! Preparations are now beginning for the first competition of the three week session.

WILLSBORO, NY -- In what will now undoubtedly become a perenial highlight of the 3-week session, both camps competed in the newest version of Camp’s 3-week Big Game.
Camp’s 100th summer brought with it an attmept by Intermediate counselor Chuck Steiner, Highlander counselor Courtney Haynes and Camp Executive Director
Sharp Swan to harness the enthusiasm and psych created each year by the Revolutionary War Game, played on USA’s Independence Day. Steiner, Haynes, and Swan chose to create

a game that reenacted the three days of the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylanvia, during the American Civil War.
The game was modelled closely after the “Rev War” game, but, with Swan’s expertise on the history of the Civil War
and the Battle of Gettysburg, a few key twists were thrown in.

in the actual 1863 battle. Also chalked on the ground at the Boys’ camp were Baracade Zones and Flanking Zones, each of which had their own strategic part in the game.
The game went exceedingly well, and was followed, as is the Rev War, by a dance in the evening. The game and dance do a
wonderful job of showing every camper, old and new the type of energy and enthusiasm that exists at Pok-O-MacCready, and why
they are lucky to be spending all or portions of their summer here.
Stern and Bush’s See-Saw Record in Jeopardy
WILLSBORO, NY -- During the Summer of 1968, two Pok-O camper, John Bush and Joseph Stern set a new world See-Saw record of 60 straight hours. Joe
Stern died shortly thereafter, and he has always been recognized for his incredible Pok-O Spirit.
Today, when a camper has attended seven summers at Pok-O, he receives the Joe Stern Pok-O Spirit Award.

On Thursday, July 29, 2004, two senior Pok-O campers, Lex Artuso and Jack Connors-Kellgren began an attempt at Stern and Bush’s record.
In front of both camps, they mounted the short board that they will have to sit on for 61 straight hours, with only timed bathroom breaks. As of press time, the boys have been
See-Sawing for 23 hours and 55 minutes.
Campers, parents, and staff are all working together to support the boys in their quest.
Updates will be posted as the boys draw nearer their goal.
