PICKING AND GRINNING

Pioneers spend an afternoon in the strawberry fields.

berryhands    It was strawberry fields for every Pioneer as the group headed to the orchard for a little berry picking yesterday. Even though the fields were a little soggy, Pioneers picked fruit with fierce determination. “There were ten long rows of strawberriespiopick8 and most of them were ripe,” remarked Sam, “someone filled up six buckets.”

The boys didn’t just fill buckets with berries, they also filled their bellies. “I liked picking berries and just eating them. They were so good,” said Jackson.  “At one point Aidan had a red shirt from wiping his hands on it over and over,” explained George. Pioneer counselor Evan Haynes shared some details about the day. “The boys were hiding behind the bushes and eating berries. Then when they would see me they would yell to each other to be quiet so that I didn’t find them! They must have forgotten that I could hear them,”

Campers enjoyed walking in the fields in search for berries but Travis thought, “the tractor ride to the strawberry fields was the best part.” The rest of camp will be benefitting from the boys’ hard work. Camp chef Mike Gast plans on whipping up a special strawberry dessert to use the forty quarts of strawberries that the Pioneers brought back from their trip.

GAME ON

The shouts and cheers were deafening yesterday during the intense kickball match up between the Intermediate boys and the Senior girls. “We had more team spirit than the boys did,” remarked Sonja. Elah agreed, “Yes our cheer was the coolest.”

The game was intense from the very start with quick innings and strong defense from both teams. Emma revealed that the Senior girls “came into the game thinking that we would blow the Intermediates away.” However that was not the case in the end. “We crushed them,” exclaimed, Intermediate camper Nate.

Counselors decided to put a twist on the evening by swapping campers. Senior female counselors coached the Intermediate Boys while male counselors coached the Senior girls. Harrison felt, “betrayed, but it worked out in our favor.” The game ended with the boys having a five run lead over the girls for a final score of seven to two.

Riders enjoyed a day in Lake Placid while attending the annual Lake Placid Horse Show. Attending the show was purely for fun and gave riders a chance to watch and learn.

Riding Director Michelle Goldman explained, “it’s important for our riders to get a chance to watch a show. It gives them a chance to relax without the nervousness of competing.”

When asked what she thought about the day Olivia replied, “it was unbelievable! The jumps were so high it was amazing.” Senior camper, Hannah mentioned that “now I am really excited for The Willow Hill Horse Show. Watching everyone ride makes me want to compete too.” Riders will get their chance to compete  this Sunday at Willow Hill.
