CLIMBING TOWARDS COMPLETION

Camp rock climbing enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the official opening of new climbing tower.

     “It’s pretty awesome actually.” That’s what ADV camper Nate had to say when asked about his impressions towerroofinsideof the new indoor/outdoor climbing tower. “It’s really huge inside and out and I am so excited to try some climbs.” CIT camper Leah echoed, “With the addition of the new tower, the old one now seems small and limited. The new climbing tower offers a ton of options and I can’t wait to get on the wall.”

     The new four-story indoor/outdoor climbing setholds2tower was started over a year ago when the ground with the ground breaking on June 8th, 2008. The crew worked to set the foundation and get the building framed and closed in by winter. “This facility has been planned for years and it’s exciting because now it’s being built,” explained Shai Walker, who has been assisting in the building of the tower.

     The new tower is still a work in progress, but Rock Climbing specialist Mark Scott is confident that the tower will be ready for camper use soon. “We’ve been working hard to set climbing routes and secure the holds. Once we have a few climbs in place the campers will be able to get in here and start climbing, which is what this is all about.”

     Campers know that the time is drawing near when they will be able to climb high with no interruptions. “It’s so great that we now have a place to climb indoors,” remarked Highlander camper Natalie, “now there is nothing stopping us from getting in there, climbing hard and having fun.

BABES OF BLACKSMITHING

     Highlander girls tried their hand at Blacksmithing the other evening when they headed to the blacksmith shop and fired up the forge. Several Highlander girls take Blacksmithing class and were able to use the time to finish projects that they had previously started. “It was really good to finish something that I had started,” Xandra remarked. Emily thought “it was really challenging because I have never done it before. It was a lot of fun and I now wish that I would have taken the class this summer.” Nicole summed up the experience by saying, “it was the most fun section activity we have done and because we are a small section we are able to do different things that you couldn’t do with a larger section.”

“AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS”

     As a special treat after blacksmithing, Highlander section head Isa Kreigeskotte used the already prepared fire to make some “Banana Boat Goodness” for the girls. Everyone thought that the snack was “tasty and delicious” and everyone was excited about the chance to make their own gooey snack.” Try this treat at your next campfire!

STEP 1: Split a banana open down the middle and put chocolate chips inside.

STEP 2: Add some marshmallows to the middle of the banana.

STEP 3: Smear peanut butter on top and wrap in tinfoil. Place in fire until insides are melted. Enjoy!

A “REEL” GOOD TIME

fishfun4     These smiling faces (the campers not the fish) prove that the fish must be biting down at Long Pond. Fishing classes have been popular this summer and campers have been bringing in a lot of fish of a sizable nature.fishfunGrif

     “I have taken fishing each summer that I have been here, but the fishing this summer is better” remarked Senior camper Griffin. When asked to elaborate Griffin explained, “I am in a class with fewer people who are more experienced and we have a double period which gives us more time to fish.”

     Returning camper, Josh also commented about the class saying that, “it’s relaxing until you get a bite on your line and then it’s an intense race to pull the fish into your boat.”
