When it comes picturing summer camps activities, sailing, swimming and arts and crafts would definitely be on the list; however, here at camp traveling back in time is also an activity to choose from.
At the 1812 Homestead classes and activities are in full swing and campers are trying out all the Homestead has to offer. Each week the “Homesteaders” sit down and select from a long list of things they would like to work on that week. Things that campers will be making vary from beehive oven cooked cinnamon rolls, to homemade soap, lanterns and stilts.
Campers also do activities that help to improve the living history museum such as shingle making. Homestead instructor, Melody explained that “the campers are really enthusiastic and they have helped to make the 250-300 shingles that were put on the Turkey Coop.”
“This is my first year choosing Homesteading and I think it’s really fun. I like Blacksmithing because I am making a hoof pick for my horse and it’s cool to be able to make something you can use,” explained Highlander camper Alex. “I like that there are so many things that you can do here which is nice because it will keep the class interesting.”
Campers not only get a chance to experience the challenges of life in 1812, but also learn life lessons. A good work ethic, learning not be wasteful and an appreciation for what you have are some of the values that campers learn while having a good time down at the Homestead.
