Gettysburg, Pa- July 3, 1863-- “This was different then any game I’ve ever played before,” raved camper-soldier Christopher V.
The entire camp gathered on dining hall hill Thursday afternoon to take part in the annual Blue-Grey game. It’s Pok-O-MacCready’s version of a Battle of Gettysburg reenactment, staged in three separate battles. Lots of action; lots of fun. “It’s my first year playing,” said Julia of the Confederacy. “The last game we did better. I stayed in a group part of the time with my friends and I got a lot of people out.” Union soldier James D “liked throwing flour hawks,” while his southern counterpart Jason P was more blunt: “I liked killing Union People!”
A flour hawk is a harmless sock, filled with flour, and iin this game it is a special treat that counselors can also play. “Things were a little confusing, but I hit a counselor, which was cool,” reflected Cami. Matthew S added, “I hit (Pok-O Headmaster) Josh with a flour hawk. I couldn’t believe it. He had to go to jail!”
In truth, one of the popular aspects of the game is that no one has to go to jail. When a prisoner is captured, he or she need only to check in with the jail and return to the home territory. “I liked how when you got hit,” said Zach H, “you didn’t have to stay in jail.”
The Union managed to win all three games and “kept history the way it was,” according to Matt E. Despite the win, it was a bloody Civil War.
Boy vs Girl: “I hit a boy right in the thigh,” said Olivia. “I had a good time!”
Brother vs. Sister: “The best part,” said Tommy S., “was hitting my sister with a flour sock!”
