REACHING GREAT HEIGHTS

Camp’s Wilderness Tradition Dates Back 105 Years

Hike6     In the first decades of camp, hikers would walk from camp to New York’s highest peak, Mount Marcy.  The trip required four days, and some 50 miles of hiking.  Today, with vehicles and maintained trails, Marcy can be climbed in a matter of hours.  But in keeping with Pok-O-MacCready tradition, several 2009 campers will follow in the footsteps of their early 20th century brethren.  “I just signed up to do Super Marcy” said Annie W.  “I’m really excited.  I also signedHike5 up for other hikes and I want to finish my (Adirondack) 46 next year.”

Annie’s enthusiasm for hiking can be felt all over camp.  “I already have 15 46ers,” boasted 10-year old Jacob, while standing in line to sign up for another trip.  “I just want to finish my 46ers.”  On Wednesday, every boys camper climbed at least one mountain.  “Great views and lots of blueberries,” raved Peter P., who climbed Catamount.  Hank was on one of the tougher hikes- Basin and Saddleback- and mentioned how “it was tough to get there, and the rocks on Saddleback required us to find hand holds, but the view was great!”  As a result of that hike’s success, Pok-O trips have now climbed all of the Adirondack 46ers during the summer camp season.

“I’m just getting into it,” said MacCready camper Laura P, “but I’ve already done some tough trips.  It’s fun to be out in the woods for three days, but you get a little smelly by the end!”

Gettysburg, PA -July 1, 1863-- Confederate forces under the command of Gen. Robert E. Lee have made their way into the outskirts of this small Pennsylvania town, presumably set to wage battle against the defending Union army.

“We’re only here to try and comandeer some shoes for our soldiers,” claims Lee.  None the less, the Yankee troops, under the leadership of Gen. George Meade are bracing for an attack.
