THINGS HEAT UP

The rumblings of war begin.

dianalooksdown    Peace had reigned for most of the year until last night. The first official Council Fire was held and five tribes who had been at peace will now engage in fierce competition in the weeks to come. All five tribes gathered separately at first to cheer and chant before they were welcomed into the Council Fire Ring. The victors of last year’s competition, the Seneca, entered first followed by the Onondaga, Cayuga, Mohawk and Tuscarora tribes. Braves and larsonprincesses took their seats and listened to the storyteller explain why the peace had been disturbed.

The first council fire is the time when new braves and princesses learn which tribe they will be joining. Rachel Larson who attended the three week session last year said that Indian Days played a big part in her decision to switch to the four week session. She explained, “I am really excited to learn what tribe I will be joining. I am hoping that I will be an Onondaga, because my mom was an Onondaga (I think).” Larson was in fact officially welcomed into the tribe at the urbanscouncil fire last evening.

Ferdinand and Stephanie Urban also revealed that Indian Days was a reason they wanted to give the four week session a try. When asked if they had any particular tribe in mind Ferdinand replied, “I think all of the tribes look good. I would like to be on any one of them.” With the addition of the new braves and princesses it is hard to tell which tribe will come out on top this year. New camper Vali Goberville said it best, “I just don’t know what to expect.”

“SCHOOL’S OUT, BUT CLASS IS IN SESSION”

The first full day of classes began yesterday as campers traveled to the activities that they signed up for during the activity fair. With so many activities offered there is a lot to choose form, and each camper has their own way of deciding. “This summer I picked classes that I don’t normally take,” Megan Russo explained. “I thought it would be interesting this summer to try something new.”

Pioneer camper Aidan Chalnick also went for something new, “At my old camp I took Fishing and Archery, but they didn’t have Mountain Biking so that is new to me.” Hannah Bagli revealed that Pottery “was my number one choice. I want to experiment with clay and make stuff for my dad this summer.” Senior Alex Straus, echoed the sentiments of other campers when it came to choosing classes. “I take Rifelry and Rock Climbing because they are fun, but this summer I also took Blacksmithing because it looks cool.” With so many classes to take it’s clear that campers will be busy all summer. Sarah Radisch summed it up by saying, “It’s awesome actually when classes start because you have interesting things to do all day long.

“FUELING THE FUN”

dhfuncits

Camp requires a lot of energy and stamina. With so much to do, it’s important to eat well and fuel up for the next round of fun.

Mealtime; however, is usually a fun place to be anyway! Campers sit at assigned tables each week and get a chance to meet new people.

When it’s time to clear the table there’s sure to be a song or two before announcements. Between the delicious food and the fun atmosphere many campers look forward to the next meal.
