STAY AWHILE

Parents and friends join campers for a day of fun.

visitchalniks    Before the last cereal bowl could be cleared, parents and friends of campers were arriving, eager to get their Visiting Day started. Campers were eager too, shouts and squeals of delight could be heard all over camp as families were reunited.

For some campers yesterday was not only visiting day, but a birthday as well. “Today was super fun, visitjoshbecause I got to celebrate with my family and open presents,” explained Alaina, while Justin, felt that the day, “was awesome. My dad took me bowling for my birthday and then we had pizza.” Many campers chose out of camp excursions for the day. Popular options were seeing Harry Potter, shopping at the mall and buying candy. Senior camper, Eva, commented that, “it was really nice to get out. I got adopted and we went to the Ben and Jerry’s Factory which was awesome.”

A large group of campers and visitors opted to hang around camp for a large portion of the day. Campers toured their families around, visiting cabins, classes and meeting counselors. Some of the comments that could be heard were, “There’s so much to do.” “I can’t believe how neat my son’s bunk is.” “The climbing tower looks like so much fun.” Many visitors shared stories about how surreal it was to be back due to the fact that they were campers or counselors themselves. Justin Ripman shared, “It really does bring me back to be here and it is such a special place. We love it and can’t imagine being away from it for too long.”

With the beautiful weather, the huge turn out and a delicious picnic, the day was marked down as a success. Intermediate camper, Ben, summed it up saying, “It was such a great day. The fact that I hadn’t seen my parents in three weeks made it even more special that I got to spend this day with them.”

IT’S A (NOT TOO HARD) KNOCK LIFE

kwvgroup   While kids with visitors were showing off camp, the kids without visitors were getting the chance to participate in a special activity just for them. Sixteen kids piled into a van to head to the “big city” of Plattsburgh for an afternoon of shopping, eating and movie watching. Campers were broken up into groups with their friends and toured the mall along with a counselor.

“I was so excited that we went to see Harry Potter, because when I heard it was coming out I knew that I would be in camp and unable to go,” explained Intermediate camper, Henrietta. Highlander camper, Nicole, shared some details about her afternoon, “it was so much fun and even better than last year. We actually got some extra time to shop which was great. I really enjoyed my day.”

Some campers simply cannot have visitors due to the distance, but this didn’t seem to phase Lucas who described his trip saying that, “It was perfect. We looked for the candy and when we found it we bought a lot!”

Campers liked the chance to hang out with friends “on the outside” and take a day to do something different. As much as they love camp, they also love the chance to shop, eat, and watch movies too. Henrietta summed up the day saying, “I thought it was a relaxing afternoon and it was nice to take a day off from camp, but it’s good to be back too.”

COUNSELORS TAKE THE STAGE

Hilarity ensued as counselors took to the stage to present the 105th annual counselor play. The play is always performed on the eve of Visitors Day to offer a distraction and some comedic relief for kids who just spent all day with their families. The nonsensical play usually involves bad impromptu acting, off key singing, and a bucket of slop that some brave (or not too bright) counselor volunteers to eat.

Just as in years past, the plot of last night’s play revolved around every day camp events and inside jokes amongst everyone at camp. The bad guys try to get the good guys (camp) to shut down for the summer. There is an elaborate cast of characters which allows for some hilarious counselor imitations of one another. “The kids love to see their counselors get up on stage and act ridiculous,” explained MacCready Director, Missy Livsey. “I think that it helps the kids to see their counselors not taking themselves too seriously.”

There were plenty of laughs, plot twists and mud slinging to make the play highly entertaining, but how did it end? The same way that the other 104 counselor plays ended, with an entire cast and audience sing-a-long of the camp song.
