SHOWING OFF THEIR STUFF

Camp oohs and aahs as they enjoy an evening of entertainment.

willowsings     It was a full house as the lights went up in Robinson Hall for the 105th annual Talent Competition. Eight different acts were performed that showcased a myriad of talents. The crowd was silent as they listened and watched while people sang, danced, and juggled for the audience.

Rising star, Willow, debuted her first song ever titled, “Just Me and My Friends,” which depicted her story of having no friends when she was born and the good fortune of now attending school where she has made lots of friends. Pioneer, Sam, did a classic rendition of “Camp Grenada,” which had audience members laughing and singing along. A trio called “ADV-capella” sang the old classic, “My Girl” which was then followed by “Stand Bysamsings Me.”

Not to be outdone CITs Adina and Rachael both displayed their talents with a juggling act from Rachael, and a beautiful solo performance from Adina, who sang “The Way I Am.” Senior camper, Chris, astonished the crowd when he came onto the stage to dance to a popular R&B hit called “Jerk It.” He twisted, turned, jumped and twirled with such smoothness and dexterity, that even the late Michael Jackson would have been jealous.

One of the two crowning acts of the evening was a medley of sorts from the Senior boys. Even though a few lines were flubbed the audience was clearly impressed with the passion and personal style that went into the boys’ performance. Several MacCready counselors wowed the crowd with a modern dance to the hit track from Disney’s, “The Lion King.” The dancers who wore all black in order to keep the focus on the dance itself, gave a powerful performance. All participants in the competition displayed extreme courage getting up and performing to a packed house, but there can only be one winner. The judges; however, are still deliberating.

The MacCready ladies laced up their boots, donned their polypropylene and shouldered their packs yesterday for their 105th annual MacCready trip day. There were a variety of trips to spark the interest of even the most disinterested hikers.

CIT camper, Alicia was on the Porter and Cascade expedition and, “excited to hike my first 46er. It was a good trip and I am glad that it was easier than I thought.” Fellow CIT, Miri was “really pumped to be on the Rattlesnake hike. They put me on it every year and it’s always an amazing hike. I love that I know every rock and turn in the trail.”

Intermediate camper, Katie described her “Long Pond Adventure trip as, “really windy. We were canoeing so it made it kind of hard to paddle, but the trip was still really fun.”

The girls were happy to get out and take advantage of the weather but, were equally as pleased to return home and hit the showers after hitting the hills.

ROCK AND ROLL

rockdanni    “It was the best rock climbing trip I’ve ever been on.” This is how ADV camper Nate, described the first rock climbing trip of the summer. “The hike in was smooth and the 140 foot cliffs were sweet. There were three different climbs that Mark (the rock climbing director) set up. They were called Big Bertha, Mr. Clean and Mr. Dirty. The entire cliff that we climbed on was called ‘Bark Eater’ and it was awesome. Everyone got to belay, as well as, get a lot of climbing in.”

“I was so excited to get to the top of the rock,” shared Senior camper, Gillian, “it was really rewarding because the climbs were kind of difficult. It is a lot different to climb on real rock versus a climbing tower.” Intermediate camper, Elah had the chance to be the first to do a difficult crack climb. “I did it last year, but this was way better, because it was double the height. I was the first to go up so I had to find the route. It was hard, but worth it when I reached the top.tarpbed

The climbers packed in all of the climbing equipment, food, and their own personal gear. Daniela explained the group’s backcountry bedroom as, “cozy and comfortable. We set up one tarp on the ground and one above for all ten of us to sleep under. It was really cool.” However, the best highlight of the trip may have been the weather. “It was the first rock climbing trip in all my years at camp,” Nate commented, “where it didn’t rain and we all were able to climb.” The group returned dry and happy until they began to de-prep in the rain once they reached camp.
