America’s Pastime

Jason P. had never been to a professional baseball game.

Until Friday night.  “It was exciting to share it with my Pok-O-MacCready friends.  Added Louis and Scott C:  “It was cool going out with friends and just hanging out.”

Those three joined the rest of the Senior campers and staff at Centennial field in Burlington, to watch the Vermont Lake Monsters, a minor league affiliate of the Washington Nationals.

Edwin echoed his friends sentiments in saying “I liked watching the game and having a night out of camp with friends.”

The game begain an hour late, due to weather, but “The kids were incredibly enthusiastic,” said Headmaster Josh Bornt, who has been taking the senior boys to a ball game every year since 2002.  “In fact, there was a lot of goofy energy!”

As for the game, “It was good,” reviewed Taylor.  “The Lake Monsters were leading when we had to leave to catch the ferry home.”

Ipod2     Going to the baseball game was reward enough for all of the campers, but one Senior boy came away with an added bonus.

Long time camper Matt K. won an Ipod!  Matt entered himself into a “SpongeBob SquarePants” trivia contest, answered two questions correctly and had his name drawn as the contest winner.

“When it was announced, everyone cheered!”, said one of the counselors.  After being mobbed by his friends, Matt went to the top of the dugout to collect his prize.  He’s seen (right) showing it off after.

LeantoGirlsLONG POND PARADISE

One fixture in the Adirondack Mountains is the leanto.  A leanto is a three-sided camping shelter.  Hike anywhere in the high peaks region and you’re bound to come across one.  But don’t count on it being vacant.

Pok-O-MacCready has solved that problem.  Over the past few years, wilderness director Ken Ryba, with staff help, has constructed a leanto especially for camp, located on camp property.  In 2008, The leanto was placed at Indian Rock, a tranquil, scenic, lakeside location accessible by boat.

On Friday night, a group of MacCready campers rowed over to enjoy nice views, good food and an evening campfire before bunking down for the night.  Acting as trip leader for the overnight excursion was none other than camp director, Sharp Swan.
