The 104th season at Pok-O-MacCready Camps officially began Friday, June 20 at 5:30pm.
Throughout the month, staff members began arriving and were assigned various responsibilities including: teaching activities for the Outdoor Education Center; performing maintenance on camp grounds; and the exhaustive task of preparing the barns and horses for the summer riding program.
The entire staff is taking part in a number of seminars, most notably wilderness training (right), first aid, C.P.R., and lifeguard training (left). Once completed, the counselors will turn their attention to the basics of camp leadership: class instruction, section activities and group dynamics.
On Sunday morning, counselors were given their section assignments. “I have a really motivated group of counselors, who possess all the characteristics that the kids will gravitate towards,” stated Scott McIntyre, head of the boys Intermediate section. “There are a lot of new guys, but they totally fit in already!”
Along with a dozen new counselors, the biggest staff change is the promotion of Josh Bornt to Headmaster of Camp Pok-O-Moonshine. Bornt served as Senior section head for the past seven summers. “It’s a bit overwhelming,” commented Bornt, “but the staff is great, we have great kids coming back and I promise my mealtime announcements will be shorter then Zim’s.”
Of course, the entire focus of Pre-camp orientation is on Sunday’s arrival of the campers. As Kelly Schiulaz, director of the popular Pottery program put it: “I can’t wait; each summer seems to be better than the summer before!”
