As of July 8, Pok-O-MacCready has already sent out 27 wilderness trips, with another dozen planned for the current week. The trips come in the form of hikes, rock climbs, waterfall excursions, canoe trips, camp outs, fishing expeditions and much more.
“The weather is always one key factor to our success,” said wilderness director Ken Ryba, “and this past weekend was one of the most beautiful we’ve ever had for overnight trips into the Adirondacks.”
As for sleeping out and cooking meals in the woods, Max Greenwald remarked that “it was actually really fun because we had like three course meals with Mac & Cheese, SPAM and marshmallows!” Adina Shapiro, a member of the Sawteeth trip said, “It was a really fun hike. We saw a waterfall with a rainbow. It was awesome!”
The marquis trips take the campers to the Adirondack Forty-Sixers: New York’s 4000-foot summits. To date, over 300 members of the Pok-O-MacCready family have climbed all 46 (see list). It is, unquestionably, a challenge. “It’s was pretty tough going over the rocks with full packs,” voiced Sebastian Moody, who was on the Phelps Mountain hike, “but we had a pretty campsite and had no problem climbing the mountain.” As for the Santanoni range, one of the toughest in the Adirondacks, Kevin O’Leary and Matt Rybecki claimed, “it was buggy, we got stung by bees and the stove wouldn’t start. But we got a leanto, we sang songs and the weather was amazing!”
While several campers are close to finish their forty sixers, it was a camper who climbed her first ever high peak who may have best captured the experience. “It was almost in between hard and easy,” said Hannah Bielenson. “Some places were no problem; others were tiring. But you had to keep telling yourself ‘keep going’, because the top was coming up!”
