“GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN...”

Highlanders harness up for a “rock”-ing good time .

Rock climbing may still be a male dominated sport in the climbing world, but in the world of Pok-O-MacCready this couldn’t be further from the truth. More and more girlshighrock5 sign up for rock climbing each year, and many of them have been taking it over a consecutive number of summers.

When asked about the phenomena, Rock Climbing Specialist Joey Elton, had the following thoughts, “The girls have really been into trying new things this summer.highrock4 They enjoy climbing bare foot and also really appreciate the challenge of climbing to the top. They climb, because they just want to have fun.”

Last night the Highlander section of Camp MacCready hit the rock for an evening of climbing. The girls learned how to harness up correctly and were taught proper climbing commands. Several Highlander girls take rock climbing and were able to assist their friends by belaying them or offering tips when a route became tricky.

For Ali Mackay it’s, “all about the challenge. There’s always more than one way to the top.” Many of the girls agreed that it really is about pushing themselves and overcoming the challenge of the climb. Lindsay Kirschner explained that she likes climbing “because when you reach the top you feel accomplished, like you’re ready for the next challenge.”

WRITING AND REFLECTION

Camp is the perfect place for running, yelling and generally making a lot of noise, but sometimes it is the perfect place to quite down, think and reflect. In creative writing class students draw inspiration from being at camp and reflect on their own feelings about being here.

I feel good about being a new three-weeker. I met a lot of great friends. I even found a best friend. I’m very excited about my classes. I hope I will become a horsemaster. I met some pretty cool people; so far I met a girl from Scotland, she is my counselor. There is a girl from France, her name is Mary. The rest are from the USA. I hope to meet more from around the world.

Staying at camp all summer is a lot of fun. There are more things to do, more friends, and more time. It’s very sad when the four-weekers leave, saying goodbye to friends.

When the three-weekers come the excitement comes back as we meet new friends and welcome back old ones.
