shl1THE BIG PICTURE CAPTURES THRILLING S.H.L. FINAL

Perry Babcock’s fifth and final goal came just over two minutes into sudden death to break a 4-4 tiebigcheer and earn “The Big Picture” the Coupe Colonel Cup as 2008 winners of the Senior Hockey League, with a 5-4 victory.

Babcock’s five goal performance is believed to be the most dominating championship game effort in the 19 year history of the S.H.L. “I have never won SHL, so I really wanted to win,” Babcock reflected. “I couldn’t have done it without Tyler (Grant). He assisted three of my five goals.” Not to be outdone, Stephen Warde of the opposing “Specialer than Vespers” squad also turned in a shlpodhat trick, including a goal just three seconds into the game. “We may have gotten overconfident. We had some defensive lapses.” Warde added, “All in all it was a good game.”

The wining team’s only lead of the game came on the overtime clincher, but “we just kept battling back to keep it close the entire way,” said David Balderston, winning coach. The game, called by some observers the best they’ve ever seen in this league, featured great passing and goaltending to go along with the scoring onslaught. Along with the offensive show put on by Babcock and Warde, Vincent Brennikmeyer also had one goal.

Tyler Grant of the winning squad becomes a rare two time winner of the Coupe Colonel Cup he encapsulated the importance of the SHL to Senior Section: “I was really nervous going in, but it’s great to win again.” (see winning team photo and roster)

LONG POND REGATTA

Intermediate campers Christian Artuso and Dominick Rizzo- filled with confidence- PokoRegatta5sailed away with an easy win in Saturday morning’s Pok-O Regatta, held in perfect conditions on Long Pond.

The duo of Artuso and Rizzo, finished second in the opening heat behind defending regatta winners Jacob Bell and Max Greenwald, but in the final “we got a jolt of wind for a split second” that catapulted them from fourth, to their eventual win. As for their strategy in the victory, Rizzo mentioned “things were quiet but then I started singing. That was our trick.

The battle for second place was a close one, with the French brothers- Rudy and Arthur Peugeot edging out Nathan Swan and Matt Hepworth. The defending champions ended in fourth.

Following several weeks of either rainy, or calm conditions, the wind picked up under a sunny sky for today’s race. Still ahead for the sailors during session #2: The Lake Champlain Regatta, and Jack’s Cup. (see a list of all finishers here)
