OPENING NIGHT

At camp, “Anything Goes”

CampPlay1A ship board romance with music, singing and dancing. It may not sound like camp but, for one night, campers took to the high seas for a night of comedy. The annual camp production, “Anything Goes” played to a full house Thursday night at the H.T. Swan theatre barn.

Starring Adina Shapiro, Will Shannon, Brooke Thayer, Nathan Swan, Chris Brakey, Annie White and scores of other singers, dancers and actors, the campers had worked for over three weeks to master the 100+ page script. “It was hard to remember the cues,” said Brakey, “but the lines weren’t hard once you got rolling.

Campers juggled play practice in between hikes, Indian Days and activities, making the final product that much more impressive. “I’m so happy with how it went,” stated Shapiro, “but I’m also relieved now that it’s over.”

INTER-CAMP BASKETBALL

The Pok-O-MacCready team took on a much bigger squad from Camp Lincoln Thursday night at home. Pok-O was unfortunately without the services of some of its better players (below, right) who held out due to a contract dispute.

None the less, the remaining enthusiastic players hung as best they could with the opponents, before a downpour put an abrupt end to the action midway through the second quarter. “I’m not sure what the score was,” voiced Pok-O coach Jon McDonald, “but I think that we had pulled to within 20 when it started to rain.”

ONCE A CAMPER, ALWAYS A CAMPER

This summer, two former campers and staff members have returned to Pok-O-MacCready as part of camp’s alumni and parent program. Dennis Hepworth (a counselor during the 1980’s) is back for the third straight year, helping to run activities and do maintenance around camp. At left, Hepworth assists with the relocation of the new camp leanto.

Wayne Genthner, a camper during the 1960’s and 70’s, owns a fishing charter business on the Gulf of Mexico. He has returned to camp to share his passion and knowledge with the campers. Here’s an account written by Ken “Squeaky Herz”, a current staff member, and former camper with Genthner:

Camp’s most legendary fisherman returned to camp after a thirty year hiatus. Wayne Genthner, 13-time winner of “best fisherman” in Intermediate section, Wayne1spent four days at camp this week to lead an advanced fishing clinic.

Genthner, owner and operator of “Wolf Mouth Charters” (deep sea fishing), located in Sarasota, Florida, came to camp with his videographer, Pamela Marwede.

Campers learned how to tie surgeon knots and cortez knots. They were instructed in casting technique, and learned how to use flouro-carbon leader to hide a line from the fish.

Thursday morning count for Wayne, Ken H., Daniel Pritchet, Jason Veitch, Travis Fischer, Chris Papavassiliou and Mitch Buscemi was ten bass, eight pike, one sunfish and a big perch. This included a monster pike caught by Mitch (see Photo of the Day, July 25) and a mega-bass caught by Daniel. Genthner and the campers helped to clean the eligible fish with the reward being a tasy addition to lunch.

Wayne loved his visit; he donated fishing equipment to camp and has vowed to return again.
