Macky and the Big Mac

Another 46er Finish along with the MacCready Horse Show

46erLogo

   To complete the Adirondack 46ers, which some 300 camp people have accomplished over the past 50 years, one has to endure many different weather conditions. And few camp 46er finishes were as wet as yesterday’s hike up Lower Wolf Jaw. The rain began at 7:30 in the morning and continued uninterrupted into the evening. Still, at 2:28 in the afternoon, a group of persistent hiking campers reached the summit of Lower Wolf Jaw, including Mackenzie “Macky” Young, who completed her forty-six.

   Even in the damp conditions, the summit celebration was festive, with chips, doughnuts, candy, soda and, naturally, baby food (squash flavored). “It was definitely rainy and wet,” said fellow camper Eleanor Roberts, also a 46er, “but it was all worth it just to see the look in Macky’s eyes when she reached the top!” Roberts added, “She’s definitely worthy of the honor.”

   Worthy indeed. In the past 12 months Young has not only completed the 46, but has successfully reached the summit of both Mt. Ranier, and Mt. Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps. Sunday’s 46er finish comes almost exactly 40 years after Macky’s father, Wally, completed his 46 while a camper. (see list) Wally and Kate Young joined their daughter on Sunday’s climb up Lower Wolf Jaw.

   In this, the final week of the opening session of camp, nearly a dozen day hikes and overnight trips are scheduled. A few other campers are in line to complete their 46ers. Camp trips, as a whole, have ascended 43 of the 46 so far in 2008.

BIG MacCREADY #1

LittleMac1   Rainy days and Sunday’s never get us down at camp, and while many campers took to the woods for hiking and climbing, many other stayed behind to take part in the MacCready Horse Show: The first of two this summer hosted by camp.

   Joining Pok-O-MacCready riders were several equestrians from outside camps and riding programs. Due to the incliment weather, the program was cut short by a number of classes, but most of the riders still got to compete.

   “Even though it rained, everyone had fun,” voiced Isabelle Zahn, one of camp’s top riders, who competed in the Green Hunter class. Dozens of ribbons were handed out (online results coming up soon), and one class champion ribbon was awarded to first year camper Madeline Mele. “The rain didn’t bother me at all,” said Mele. “Everyone was very positive.”

   Riders hit the road over the next two weekends prior to coming home for the Big MacCready #2, August 10. (See a lineup of riders from Sunday’s show HERE)

“I’m So Far From Home”

Original song by camper Samantha Jessner

I’m so far from home, on my own,

Waiting for something spectacular.

It hit me down to the ground;

I couldn’t get up.

I found some friendly faces

to help me back up.

Now we’re having fun together;

we’re soaring up high.

We’re in it together,

I’m not on my own.
