Going, Going, Gonzalez!

Intermediate becomes Adirondack Forty Sixer

   The tradition continues.46erLogo

12-year old Andrew Gonzalez reached the summit of Mt. Colden Thursday afternoon to complete his Adirondack 46ers. “Words can’t describe it!”, raved Gonzalez, who becomes the first camper in 2008 to AGon4complete the quest. “I was running through the tunnel (human tunnel, made up of fellow hikers) to the top and thinking to myself: ‘Yes!’”

Joining Gonzalez on his ultimate climb were a group of fellow campers, including MacCready camper and cousin Hannah Bagley; Gonzalez’s brother, Alec; and his parents, Pam and Mauricio. Andrew’s final peak was his father’s first 46er, and “he says he’s not climbing another one until Alec finishes his 46.” The climb comes 37 years after Gonzalez’s grandfather, former camp Headmaster Bob Andrews, completed his 46ers.

The summit celebration included a feast of potato sticks, Gummy Bears, Mountain Dew, and baby food (see Photo of the Day, July 18).

Gonzalez climbed his first mountain, Cascade, during the summer of 2005. Since that time, he has been in hot pursuit of the 46, and has run off an impressive string of hikes for a younger camper. Additionally, earlier this year, he became the youngest ever solo finisher of the Patch Sprint adventure race and climb.

Yesterday’s 46er finish was the 304th in the storied climbing history of Pok-O-MacCready camps (see list), and several more campers and counselors are in line to complete their 46 over the next several weeks, according to wilderness director Ken Ryba.

“Other camps don’t want to, or are afraid to play us in volleyball,” boasts Pok-O Headmaster and volleyball coach Josh Bornt. “So we have our own tournament, and it’s bigger and better than anything else we could do with another camp!”

Again in 2008, the “Pok-O Closed” lived up to the hype. 38 players, male and Voll1female, from six teams took part in the round robin event Thursday afternoon (see rosters). There were some surprises. “I had Foreign Legion II, last year’s runners-up, and Back From Sports Camp among the favorites,” said Bornt. Neither team made it to the second round.

In the semi-finals, Friday Night Lights eliminated Drinking Milk Is Not a Hannah, while The Death Eaters squeaked by Schott To the Heart. Friday Night Lights swept the final 25-15, 25-11.

In speaking of the final, Alex Bridgewater of the winning squad remarked, “I was pretty hyped up. I was crazy!” Other analytical comments from the winning players included: “It was team chemistry”... “We won because of me”... “Get off me”.... and the most insightful of all, “we won because we scored more points.”

ULTIMATE FRISBEEUlt5

Ult3   Make no mistake, Ultimate Frisbee is about competition. But it’s also about fun and camaraderie. No one knows that better than Pok-O head coach Caleb Balderston, who not only leads his players through a series up hyped up cheers, but has taken an already solid camp program to even greater heights.

Thursday evening at the MacCready ball field, Pok-O-Mac defeated the boys from camp Lincoln 15-9. “The kids played their hearts out,” said Balderston. “Everyone got to play a lot, which was good.

Gabe Orosco of the winning team commented that “it was kind of easy this year, but still fun.” Added Peter Joelson, “I got knocked down and had the wind knocked out of me, but I still had a good time. (See rosters and team photo)
