The tradition continues.
12-year old Andrew Gonzalez reached the summit of Mt. Colden Thursday afternoon to complete his Adirondack 46ers. “Words can’t describe it!”, raved Gonzalez, who becomes the first camper in 2008 to complete the quest. “I was running through the tunnel (human tunnel, made up of fellow hikers) to the top and thinking to myself: ‘Yes!’”
Joining Gonzalez on his ultimate climb were a group of fellow campers, including MacCready camper and cousin Hannah Bagley; Gonzalez’s brother, Alec; and his parents, Pam and Mauricio. Andrew’s final peak was his father’s first 46er, and “he says he’s not climbing another one until Alec finishes his 46.” The climb comes 37 years after Gonzalez’s grandfather, former camp Headmaster Bob Andrews, completed his 46ers.
The summit celebration included a feast of potato sticks, Gummy Bears, Mountain Dew, and baby food (see Photo of the Day, July 18).
Gonzalez climbed his first mountain, Cascade, during the summer of 2005. Since that time, he has been in hot pursuit of the 46, and has run off an impressive string of hikes for a younger camper. Additionally, earlier this year, he became the youngest ever solo finisher of the Patch Sprint adventure race and climb.
Yesterday’s 46er finish was the 304th in the storied climbing history of Pok-O-MacCready camps (see list), and several more campers and counselors are in line to complete their 46 over the next several weeks, according to wilderness director Ken Ryba.
