Bring on the Parents!

104th Annual Pok-O Picnic Scheduled for Saturday

PicnicLogoWhat was once a day to sweep into camp, pick up your kid and hustle on out has become a day of fun at camp for parents and campers alike.

“A few years ago we decided to revise our visiting day schedule,” stated Pok-O-MacCready director of admissions Fiona Dubuss. “The results have been better than weGittlers07 hoped!” The biggest change was an earlier start time for the picnic lunch, along with a theme for the chicken barbecue. Past years saw a Old West theme and a Mexican fiesta. This year’s theme: “A Tropical Paradise”. There will be spicy chicken, rice, beans, plenty of side dishes and, of course, James’s ice cream.

Aside from the picnic, parents and visitors will have the opportunity to watch campers during the morning classes and activities. The main draw in recent years has been the chance for parents to have afternoon “Play Time”. “I can’t believe I got to shoot a bow and arrow,” raved one parent in 2007. “I’d never done it before.” Parents can also play tennis, take out boats, swim, and visit camp’s 1812 Homestead farm and museum. And, added Dubuss, “there will still be plenty of time to take your child out of camp, have a nice dinner, do a bit of shopping, and have them back in time for the counselor play.”

FLAGS OF OUR CAMPERS

The latest addition to our growing array of camp flags comes courtesy of Isak, a boy’s Intermediate camper whose family hails from Croatia.

From the start of camp in 1905, campers have come from far and wide. In fact, one of the original reasons for starting a camp was to give international students- who did not have the time or means to travel home during the summer- a place to go for fun and study during July and August.

Over the years, campers and staff have come from every continent, and “many of them have donated flags, or we’ve purchased flags to honor their countries,” said camp Director Sharp Swan. Certainly, the flags give the dining hall a colorful, classy look and feel, as well as “a true sense of the diverse history of our camp.”

MUSIC and ART

For sure, Pok-O-MacCready is loaded with sports, competition and plenty of physical activity. The hiking and riding programs, among others, are testament to that. Not mentioned as much, but just as popular are the many opportunities for campers to pursue the arts.

Last week, we posted some of the works from our talented campers in the pottery class (see gallery HERE). Later in the summer, we will feature the drama, drawing and photography programs. Here now is a look at music and creative arts. The music class has grown dramatically over the past few summers and now needs four instructors. Creative arts, headed by specialist Marcy Bernstein, has over 70 boys and girls involved with the class.
