Ribbons Aplenty at Summer’s First Show

Clintonville, NY- 42 Riders and colse to 20 horses headed out from Pok-O-MacCready at dawn on a rainy Sunday morning. WillowHill13Their destination: Willow Hill Farm and the Kiwanis Club Horse show, the first competition of the summer season.WillowHill16

“We had an unbelievable turnout for our first show,” raved riding Director Catherine Harrison. “Many more than we usually have!” The riders were a mix of seasoned show veterans and competition rookies. Pok-O-MacCready acquitted itself well, going up against compeition that spends the summer riding exclusively. In addition, many camp riders took to the course on horses they were not very familiar with.

Among those who captured reserve and champion ribbons were Nicole Jarck, Montana Machson, Erin Gilmore, Sam Jessner and Emma Dietz. “It makes me feel proud,” said Dietz. “Especially because I was riding a horse that’s blind in one eye, and he’s such a great horse!”

“It’s great to finally go to a show and jump,” voiced Jarck. “This (all of the ribbons) proves that all the work was worth it.”

OH, BLACK WATER: PART 2PokoBoat8

A week ago, the Onondaga girls captured first place in the Camp MacCready Great Indian Swim & Boat Carnival. Sunday, it was the boys turn, and again it was the tribe in black taking top placing at the Pok-O-Moonshine Indian Boat Carnival.

Events included the canoe bob; rowboat without paddles; sink the Bismark, and the kayak and surfboard tow. Also, a fishing derby, which was won by Matt Hepworth of the Onondaga, with a 15.5” bass. There were several close events, and the final results came as a surprise to many. “I didn’t think we would win the whole thing,” said ‘Daga Peter Kalin. “I thought we had won it,” stated one member of the Seneca tribe. In the end, the Onondaga were followed by, in order, the Cayuga, Tuscarora, Seneca and Mohawk.

The boat carnival had an actual carnival feel, with loud music blaring throughout to keep the campers spirits up. Also prevalent was a steady downpour during much of the event. “I didn’t mind at all,” said Seneca Chad Canning. “It was fun. I like playing in the rain.”

Indian Games continue next week, with nine contests in three days. (See results and rosters HERE)
