Horsing Around

Camp’s Riding Program is in Full Swing

LeadingColt

Since it’s founding in 1967, Camp MacCready has been anchored by it’s equestrian program. In the 40 years since, the girl’s camp has branched out in many ways, taking part in dozens of activities from Indian Games to hiking. And while riding was once a program predominantly for girls, there are now many boys who take lessons, compete in shows, and participate in the “HorseMasters” program.

Two veteran riding campers give their insight on a program that’s considered one of the best of any Adirondack camp.

“RELATIONSHIPS WITH FRIENDS and HORSES”                by, Teonna O’Leary

OlearyMount   The riding program here at Pok-O-MacCready Camps is wonderful, It’s all about fun, learning, and lasting relationships. The fun is created by the campers in their lessons. There are multiple levels of experience- all the way from riders who jump full courses, to riders who have never been near a horse. Campers leave camp knowing a lot more than when they arrived.

Another thing we have are horse shows. There is a horse show every Sunday (see schedule). All levels of riding can participate because there are multiple classes. Some people get very competitive while others do it just for fun.

The lessons are full of games, fun and excellent teaching from the instructors. All in all, the riding program is one of a kind. You learn, win ribbons, and you walk away with friends who will last forever, and bonding relationships with the horses that will last a lifetime.

The riding program at Pok-O-MacCready is great and no one should miss out. We have an awesome group of riding instructors from all over the world, including Ireland, France, England and the United States.

During our lessons we practice jumping, equitation and some dressage. This year, we even have a brand new rubber riding ring, which is great for horses and riders alike. It provides a nice smooth surface and good footing for the horses. We also have three other riding rings for our lessons. The classes range from beginning riders all the way to advanced riders.

We also go to shows on the weekends and have a lot of fun. The riding program at Pok-O-Mac is wonderful!

FORGING SOME FUN

Several summer camps have riding. Many have hiking, boating and fishing. All have sports and swimming.

But not a lot of camps have a blacksmith program. “It’s one of the things that makes us unique,” boasts Jack Swan, camp owner and manager of the 1812 Homestead, where the blacksmith shop is located.

“It’s interesting,” says first time blacksmith Emma Berry. “You get to make hooks and marshmallow sticks. I still want to make a bracelet.” Adds Hannah Karp: “It’s easier than I expected, but challenging all the same.”

Ari-al Raeburn concludes, “It’s awesome. You can make whatever you want. There are no limitations to what you can make. It’s a really good class.”
