“NIGHT IN THE NORTH COUNTRY”

An evening of Bingo, flannel, and pickled eggs gives campers a taste of North Country culture.

bingohall   Last night with a little help from a few actual North Country inhabitants, Robinson Hall was transformed into a Bingo Hall for North Country Bingo night. Campers turned up in their finest flannel and several of them practiced perfecting their North Country accents. Many dressed as hillbillies or farmers, and there were even a few bingo playing grandmas as well.  Campers played to win coveted prizes such as, David’s Sunflower Seeds, Slim Jims, Mountain Dew, alucand money for tonight’s Casino Night.

Popcorn, pork rinds, and pickled eggs was some of the traditional North Country fare that was served to the players. Country music blared in between Bingo games and the entire Bingo Hall would jump out of their chairs for a North Country ho-down. Campers who showed off their best two-steppin’ and doe-se-doe won additional prizes. Isabel Adler remarked, “I love to dance and I really wanted to win some sunflower seeds.”

Many campers were really focused on the game and one table had a string of extreme luck. “We had four people win Bingo at our table. We definitely had some bingo magic going on” stated Jessica Boasera. Lucas Ring said that the best part of the night for him was “the dressing up and acting like I was actually someone from the North Country.” Kyleigh Leddy agreed, “it was really funny to see everyone dressed up. The costumes were really good.” Ben Portugal remarked, “I was definitely into the game because I genuinely wanted to win. I thought the night was just really fun.”

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH...

ERIN CANNING: DIRECTOR OF CAMP MACCREADY

1. How long have you been at Camp Pok-O-MacCready?erinbailey

This is my eleventh summer here at Pok-O.

2. What is your favorite camp activity or event?

It would definitely be Indian Days; especially when the Senecas win.

3. What is your favorite thing about being the Director of Camp MacCready?

I think that for me it’s the opportunity to get to know all of the campers. You have the chance to work with the girls in every section.

4. Favorite camp meal?

It’s a toss up between the baked potato and chili meal or the turkey dinner. YUM!

5. What is the most special thing about camp for you?

It’s wonderful to see the campers form lifelong friendships here, because I know how important the friendships I have made at camp are to me. I also love watching a camper overcome their homesickness and embrace all that camp has to offer.

THE LEANTO HAS LANDED

Some weeks ago a small snippet was included in NewPokoMacTimes that reported on camp’s newest structure. The Leanto has now landed on shore at Indian Rock across Long Pond. Ken Ryba was the driving force behind the project and wanted to create a place close to Pok-O that still gave campers the wilderness experience. The leanto was built here at camp first and then was taken apart to be floated across the lake. ADV campers assisted in swimming logs over and many other staff aided in the completion of the structure. Tomorrow night will be the christening of the leanto as it hosts its first group of overnight campers.
