“RIDERS ON THE STORM”

Rainy weather doesn’t damper riders’ success or spirits at Sunday’s horse show.

grazingThe rain fell as riders and riding staff ran around in rain jackets and boots working quickly to load horses and equipment into trailers and vans. Their destination? Willow Hill. As the last away show for Pok-O-MacCready riderspassant, it was an important confidence booster for many of them. Katie Carlson said that she was “intimidated at first with the idea of going to compete somewhere else but it was really laid back. I thought I would just ride and that would be it, but I had a lot of fun when I wasn’t riding as well.” Riders and horses alike took turns “grazing” in between riding, and many campers looked for ways to assist the riding staff during the show.

Many riders were more pleased with their individual performance at the show and many people walked away with not one, but several ribbons. Passant Elashram commentedemilyjumps that she “liked this show mucwillowribbonh better than the last, because this time I won a 1st, 3rd, and 4th place ribbon. Emily Poirier had amazing success in the Low Hunter class and actually walked away with the blue ribbon. “It was my first time competing in that class so I didn’t think that I did that well, especially because there were other riders who compete in that class regularly.” Perhaps the sweetest victory; however, came for Willow Woods who won her first blue ribbon yesterday. “This is my first time riding horses and that’s part of why I came to camp. I just wanted to ride for fun so I was really surprised when I won the blue ribbon!”

With so much success at Willow Hill, the Big MacCready horse show (coming up August 10th) is sure to be a spectacular display of riding talent. (Full report and results from this show will be coming soon.)

allyshockedCAMP NIGHTS HEAT UP... AND COOL DOWN

This past week things sizzled and splashed during evening section activities. The Intermediate girls cooled off down at the docks where they had the chance to “get launched” by Shai Walker, Waterfront Director. The girls took turns swimming out to the water trampoline and then crawling out to sit on the end of “The Blob” where they waited to get launched into the air.

Many of the Intermediates had never tried the trampoline before and were very excited about the secact5activity. Ally Sullivan, “Blob” first-timer, was “really surprised by how high into the air I went.” Olivia Boraiko mentioned that “Shai bounced me so high it was scary, but really fun at the same time. Lee Cyphers preferred to stay on dry land and observe but, “really enjoyed watching everyone flipping around and flying into the air.

While the Intermediates were cooling off the CITs heated things up with their own camp version of “Iron Chef.” Two teams competed against one another to see “which chef would rein supreme.” Both teams were required to use the same ingredients which included, vegetables, pasta, soy sauce and cheese. Two guest judges came to sample each team’s cuisine and had to evaluate the food while keeping taste, texture, and presentation in mind. Megan Raffle of Team 2, remarked that one judge was “a bit picky and a little harsh, but overall a good critic.”

Colleen Dunn felt her team (Team 2) had “a better presentation complete with violin music,” but this was not enough of an advantage to give her team the win. Teonna O’Leary of the wining team (Team 1) explained, “I was confident that my team would win, because I work in a restaurant and I am an excellent cook.”
