TRIPS ARE FOR KIDS

Campers head for the hills, lakes, and rocks as Trip Week kicks off.

approachingalpineCampers always have the opportunity to take advantage of the sublime beauty that the Adirondacks offer but Trip Week is a time for campers to actually “carpe diem.” Trip Week offers a variety of trips tailored to many different outdoor enthusiasts. Among this year’s offerings are The Sewards, Whiteface and Esther, Mount Marcy, sailing on Lake Champlain, canoeing, and a rock climbing trip.”

Campers have an opportunity to choose a trip with a level of difficulty that they aretripstory1 comfortable with. Wilderness Director Ken Ryba remarked, “we want to introduce campers to the wilderness experience and teach them to love and respect nature. Varying the difficulty of the trips allows the campers to choose their challenge and encourages them to continue getting out into the wilderness.”

Many campers look forward to Trip Week and cherish their time out in nature. Christopher Van Der Linn explains, “Trip Week is a great time to take a break from the hustle and bustle of camp and to enjoy the peacefulness of the woods.” Amanda Bruha said that her main motivation for getting out is, “I just sleep better when I am out in nature.” Others feel that Trip Week is a time to “push yourself to experience something new and challenging.”

“COME SAIL AWAY WITH ME...”

Yesterday’s Champlain Sailing Regatta against Camp Dudley was kept to only one heat due to impending weather conditions, but that did not stop the Pok-O-MacCready team from sailing with smiles on their faces. Each team placed in the competition even though they were faced with rough winds and raced against faster boats.

Long Pond Regatta champ, Christian Artuso placed third overall with his novice sailing partner Nate Blum. Artuso was “very happy with third place, especially because Dudley’s boats were faster.” Blum added, “this was my first time sailing and I’m just happy that I beat my sister!” Blum and Artuso placed first amongst the Poko boats and are confident that they will win the final Pok-O-MacCready sailing competition, Jack’s Cup.

treeclub1CAMPERS HIT THE “CLUBS” FOR A MORNING OF FUN

What do Spartans, tree climbing, tea parties and super heroes have to do with Saturday mornings? They are just a few of the clubs that were offered yesterday. Campers had the chance to pick from a myriad of creative clubs (creative being the operative word) with different activities teaclub2such as, Spartan 300 Dodge Ball, Poker Club, and Super Hero Tennis Ball Golf.

Tree Climbing Club, Tea and Crumpets Club, and Ouija club were just as creative, and campers had trouble deciding which club to choose. Even though Christine Cassone has never climbed before she decided to join the “Tree Climbing Club.” “I knew that once I got to the top branch I would just want to keep going higher. You get into a rhythm and you just want to keep going.”

David Bell who participated in the “Tea and Crumpets Club” remarked that the club “was a lot like being back home in England. The tea was delightful.”

Counselors will definitely have to stretch their imaginations even further next week to top Saturday’s creative clubs.
