“THEN THERE WAS ONE”

Campers get crazy with one more day to go.

club2The last day of camp can generally be pretty crazy, but yesterday it really was. Campers spent their morning participating in the last clubs for the summer which were dubbed “crazy.” Counselors stretched their imaginations to come up with some final activities that they knew the kids would enjoy. Many different things were offered but several clubs definitely were a little more unique.

“Sun and Surf Club” took place down by the lake and kids passed the time by splashing around, sunbathing, and holding a sandcastle building contest. Several CITs decided to build a camper instead of a castle and it took the first place title. Aspiring bank robbers were able to attended a robbing workshop where they perfected the art of kidnaping their friends. Once captured people had to perform silly tasks such as “Chubby Bunny”clubs11 where you attempt to stuff as many marshmallows into your mouth as possible. The benevolent kidnappers gave captives the choice to stay in the club or return to their own.

Several hardcore hikers formed a hiking party in order to undertake “Bare Overnight in a Day.” Hikers departed outfitted with sleeping pads, tents, boots, sleeping bags and trekking poles, but unfortunately failed to bring the right map. Things went from bad to worse quickly, when lead climber James McDonough lindsay“fell” on the way up the camp road and broke his leg (for pretend). In accordance with trip leading rule number one, the group stayed together and set up camp on the side of the road (about 1/10th of a mile from the dining hall). Hiking party member Dennis Mossberg explained, “We needed help but people just kept driving past us and waving; we were cold, hungry, and scared.” Luckily the group had enough SPAM to last them until lunchtime.

Perhaps the most popular club of the day was the “Summer in a Nutshell.” Campers got together to relive the entire summer in about an hour and forty five minutes. Kids did a Moonshiner, competed in Indian Days, had Candy Store, took a rest hour, attended Beach Day and went to The Great Escape. Lindsay Kirshner stated that “It was totally worth it to participate in ‘Camp in a Nutshell’ because it was a great way to relive the memories of the summer.” Campers relished in the fun and nonsense of the morning as they made their last memories for the 2008 summer camp season.

SMOOTH SAILING

Sunny skies and good wind were the kind of conditions that sailors were looking for yesterday during Jack’s Cup. Although only a few teams competed, there was no lack of excitement during the race. Christian Artuso and Jonathan Schmer partnered up for the race after a hand injury prevented Nate Blum from sailing with regular partner Artuso.

Kayleb Costin impressed the judges by entering the race alone and coming in second place in the finals. Costin remarked that, “it was really fun to sail alone and it was almost easier.” Costin pulled another impressive move when he swam after the winning team’s boat when they forgot to tie it to the dock in their post win elation.

Sam Politi and Diego Bacci were confident going into the race, but it did not prevent them from being elated when they won the cup. “When we saw Kayleb sail into second we knew that we had won first place” stated Politi. Bacci agreed, “It was a fun race and a great feeling to come in first.”

POK-O OPEN CLOSES

The Pok-O Open’s final match was played yesterday under a setting sun. The match between Varun Anand and Ali Mackay was played on the final full day of camp as many spectators gathered to cheer on both Anand and Mackay.

Both Anand and Mackay played extremely well and Mackay was, “thrilled that I won two games. I think though that he may have been taking it a little easy on me.” Anand could not be reached for comment, but did manage to defeat Mackay for the title. Afterwards the opponents displayed superb sportsmanship by complementing one another on their game and shaking hands.

Later that evening the semifinalists and finalists were recognized before the entire camp that were gathered in Robinson Hall for the 104th annual end of summer slideshow.

schottFINISHING UP

On the last full day of camp Advanced Section camper James Schott took advantage of a beautiful day and completed the Adirondack Forty Sixers on the summit of Big Slide Mountain.

He became the eighth camper to complete his 46 during this camp season. (see entire camp 46er roster here). Schott was accompanied by his mother, father, and sister Racheal. “It was a nice hike and I am proud of my brother. It was good to see him finish.” Other guests included Advanced Section campers and counselors and Schott commented that he was glad “to finally finish,” and that it was “a cool feeling.”

Once he reached the top, Schott like all other camp 46ers before him, was required to do the traditional “baby food slam” which he then washed down with some Mountain Dew. The hiking party returned home and Schott received a standing ovation when he entered the Robinson Hall for dinner. Schott is the last camper to complete his 46 for the 2008 summer camp season.
