The last day of camp can generally be pretty crazy, but yesterday it really was. Campers spent their morning participating in the last clubs for the summer which were dubbed “crazy.” Counselors stretched their imaginations to come up with some final activities that they knew the kids would enjoy. Many different things were offered but several clubs definitely were a little more unique.
“Sun and Surf Club” took place down by the lake and kids passed the time by splashing around, sunbathing, and holding a sandcastle building contest. Several CITs decided to build a camper instead of a castle and it took the first place title. Aspiring bank robbers were able to attended a robbing workshop where they perfected the art of kidnaping their friends. Once captured people had to perform silly tasks such as “Chubby Bunny” where you attempt to stuff as many marshmallows into your mouth as possible. The benevolent kidnappers gave captives the choice to stay in the club or return to their own.
Several hardcore hikers formed a hiking party in order to undertake “Bare Overnight in a Day.” Hikers departed outfitted with sleeping pads, tents, boots, sleeping bags and trekking poles, but unfortunately failed to bring the right map. Things went from bad to worse quickly, when lead climber James McDonough “fell” on the way up the camp road and broke his leg (for pretend). In accordance with trip leading rule number one, the group stayed together and set up camp on the side of the road (about 1/10th of a mile from the dining hall). Hiking party member Dennis Mossberg explained, “We needed help but people just kept driving past us and waving; we were cold, hungry, and scared.” Luckily the group had enough SPAM to last them until lunchtime.
Perhaps the most popular club of the day was the “Summer in a Nutshell.” Campers got together to relive the entire summer in about an hour and forty five minutes. Kids did a Moonshiner, competed in Indian Days, had Candy Store, took a rest hour, attended Beach Day and went to The Great Escape. Lindsay Kirshner stated that “It was totally worth it to participate in ‘Camp in a Nutshell’ because it was a great way to relive the memories of the summer.” Campers relished in the fun and nonsense of the morning as they made their last memories for the 2008 summer camp season.
