SUMMER CAMP FOR ADULTS!

Relive old memories while creating new ones

Have you always dreamed of being a camp counselor but never had the time?. Do you enjoy teaching and coaching children, and working with young adults? Have you ever wanted to get away to the mountains, and stay in a rustic cabin along a lake? Are you longing to come back to camp?

   Well, here’s your chance!

Pok-O-MacCready is seeking parents of campers, as well as all alumni, who are interested in instructing a clinic in any field of specialized interest. “We are open to anything and everything,” announced camp director Sharp Swan. “If you have a skill and want to share it, give us a call!”

In 2006, camp parent Dennis Hepworth spent several days at camp. The 44-year old resident of Short Hills, New Jersey had worked on the Camp Pok-O-Moonshine staff from 1980-1982. For one week, he took DennisMattHeptime off from his job as a municipal bond portfolio manager to return to camp and help teach swimming and conditioning, assist in Intermediate section, serve as a guiding light for the victorious Onondaga during Indian Games and, from a distance, witness his son (Matthew, 12) living and growing at camp .

“I thought it would be great to take a few days off from work and offer my services,” said Hepworth at the time. “Camp is a part of my life that I have always cherished and always missed. It’s a very unique place. By day one, I was pulled in. I was made to feel very welcome.”

According to boys camp Headmaster Erik Zimmerman, Hepworth’s presence “infused camp with fresh ‘blood’. Both the campers and staff were energized by his enthusiasm”

The plan for 2007 is to have interested parents assist staff, or work special clinics into the everyday program. The program is flexible:  If someone wants to come up for a weekday afternoon in July, or a long weekend in August, it can probably be worked out.

As for why other alumni should do this, Hepworth stated that “It would be the time of their life to not only witness, but be involved in the kids activities. Not a lot of camps would let you do this. I got to be a kid all over again. Next year I want to come back.... for even longer!”

Meals and lodging will be provided although no one is obligated to stay at camp, and should you choose to overnight at a nearby Inn or Bed & Breakfast, we can give you some suggestions.

If you are interested in coming to camp to teach a clinic, please contact Dana Beck and alert her as to when you can make it, what you can teach and any other questions you may have about the program.

Another opportunity for parents to return to Pok-O-MacCready is to take part in Family Camp.

Held the week following camp (August 15-19 in 2007), the program is open to camper parents and kids; alumni families; as well as interested friends. Camp staff will lead in games, wilderness trips and other events, as well as supervise at free swims, open boating, rock climbing, the 1812 Homestead and a myriad of other activities.
