 Welcome Back

A former camper comes back to visit...56 years later!

sfwithmother

Do you see that young girl sitting on her mother’s lap in the photo at left? That is Suzanne Ferguson, the year is 1949, and her father Howard was the head of Intermediate section. Suzanne was here at camp with her parents from 1946 through 1951, and earlier this week we were fortunate to have Suzanne return for her first visit since 1951. Suzanne shared many stories about her summers at camp; in one, the origin of the famous cry “Counselors, there’s soup!” (for counselors to come into the kitchen and carry out the soup bowls) was told to have come from when a camper spilled a bowl of soup onto young Suzanne. Suzanne also used to spend time with camp’s legendary cook James Hankins (of James’ Ice Cream fame); at left is a picture of Suzanne watching James play the bugle, with the same photo recreated at right with our current bugler, Andrew Gonzalez. Suzanne was quite pleased that camp remains so connected with its history and traditions and that camp continues to be a place of such vibrancy.

Choose Your Fun: Saturday Morning Clubs

Each Saturday morning, after a well-received sleep-in, campers from Pok-O and MacCready gather to choose their club option for the morning. Counselors’ club offerings provide a change of pace from weekday classes and allow campers to try a new (and often quite exotic) endeavor. Some clubs emphasize more quiet pursuits, such as this morning’s crossword puzzle and friendship bracelet clubs, while others, such as roller hockey and bouldering, cater to the more active crowd. And then there are the clubs for the imaginative risk-takers, such as Trash Bag Fashion and Rodeo Clowning (see photos below)!
