 A Time to Reflect

Thoughts on the first day of camp

Every year camp is blessed with the fine leadership of its oldest campers, the young men and women in the Pok-O Advanced section and the MacCready C.I.T. section. They are the most veteran campers, and their great spirit and service to others exemplify what “Pok-O spirit” is all about. Following is longtime camper Collin McCullough’s reflection on his first day at camp this summer:

collinessay1  “Back at camp in ADV center room for my eighth year of camp. I remember sitting in a similar spot a summer ago contemplating if I would return. My first inclination was to stay home and get a job and make money, however, I knew in my heart I would return to the place I love the most. The truth is that I’ve been at camp so long I wouldn’t know how to spend my time and I would probably become very lazy. So now I’m sitting here as the first day of camp is wrapping up and I already feel right at home. I have seen all the familiar faces and the good friends I have made over the past few years. Really that is what the first day is all about: seeing those faces you remember and those you haven’t met yet while preparing for another memorable summer at Camp Pok-O-MacCready.”

Second-year camper and member of the C.I.T. section Rose Milando contributed the following poem:

They came off the van, to each other they ran.

Bright, smiling faces and warm embraces.

Reunited at last, from summers past,

Everyone wants to come back to Camp Pok-O-Mac!

Sunday Evening Vespers

Each Sunday evening the entire camp community gathers at the council fire for a time of sharing and reflection about camp. This time provides an opportunity to take some moments at the end of a busy week (or in this case, a busy first day at camp) to think about friends, family, and the camp experience. This week’s theme was “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff”, and counselors and campers shared stories, poems, and songs. Next week’s theme: “Family, Relationships, and Connections.”
