The excitement is in the air as Day 1 of camp approaches. Counselors have been hard at work preparing camp for the big day, and they can’t wait for the campers to arrive. “It’s one of the best moments of the summer” exclaims MacCready assistant director Sarah Disney (at right); “watching old friends reconnect and new friendships begin.”
The counselors have had a busy week, filled with work as well as fun. Staff members have undergone training in CPR and all trip leaders are additionally certified in First Aid. Swim instructors have enjoyed the not-too-chilly waters of Long Pond during their Lifeguarding sessions. Twenty counselors endured a vigorous bushwhack and overnight between Porter and Big Slide mountains. It was first-year counselor Will Pope’s first trip into the Adirondacks, and he was suitably impressed: “The view on Cascade was unbelievable and I can’t wait for the next hike this summer!” The new Pok-O Plex has been completed and is all set for the first hockey games, while class areas have been spruced up and are ready for instruction.
But a counselor’s life is not all work. An important part of training is play, both for community bonding and to stimulate the joy that goes on every day of summer camp. Whether it be dangling off the low ropes course, struggling in a tug-of-war contest, or simply enjoying a dip in the lake, it’s all in a day’s play for counselors in training.
