The Mohawk Step Up

Three Indian competitions to date, three different tribal winners

The Onondaga and Cayuga have each won an Indian event this summer, and yesterday was clearly the mohawkkickMohawk time to shine as they dominated the girls Rolas competition. The girls were undeterred by the misty weather and soggy fields, and the games featured a lot of slipping, sliding, and spirited play. First-time Rolas player Kaela Murphy was impressed with her first exposure to this camp game, saying that “Rolas is really, really, really, really fun!” The Mohawk got off to a fast start and were never headed as they went undefeated throughout the afternoon. The Cayuga finished second with a record of 3-1, while the Seneca, Onondaga, and Tuscarora rounded out the standings. Several players were noted for their outstanding hustle and determination, amongst them Teonna O’Leary, Carly Amurao, Taylor Calfee, and Kara Stein. Head official Dana Beck was particularly impressed with the great cheering from the sidelines throughout the games, and singled out Hannah Sargent for her great vocal leadership.   “I can change the world with my own two hands, make it a better place with my own advesperstwo hands.” This refrain echoed throughout Robinson Hall last evening as camp held its third Vespers of the summer. The theme was “Treading Lightly on the Earth” and touched on environmental concerns and campers’ responsibilities as stewards of our Earth. Anna Greenwood and Doug Cavers (at left) led a sing-along of “With My Own Two Hands”, the Lodge girls led a group singing of “Big Yellow Taxi”, and many speakers shared inspirational quotes and readings. Sharp Swan, in his weekly “Touching the Past” talk, recounted how camp’s hiking traditions stemmed from a desire to educate children as caretakers of the environment all the way back to Pok-O’s first camping trips in 1912. Missy and Zim then wrapped up the evening with the Community Announcements, telling of the week’s highlights, amongst them commenting upon campers who have been notably kind and helpful to others. The theme for next week’s Vespers is “The Magic and Spirit of Camp.”

Stepping Out: The C.I.T.’s and Advanced Section Learn the Cha Cha

chachalarge group Earlier in the week the C.I.T. girls and ADV boys got a chance to dance...but not in their usual fashion! Courtesy of counselor-instructor Alexandra Disney, the evening’s movement was focused upon the Cha Cha, not exactly the stuff of high school proms. “It was a lot of fun...lots of energy,” said one C.I.T., and the lessons culminated in a final dance contest. The winners of the contest were Marissa Malloy and Jack Kinney, while taking the prize for “Most Original” were Meredith Carroll and Benn Singer. Rumors persist that a Cha Cha video exists somewhere; stay tuned for news of a web posting!
