It is one of camp’s highest honors: being chosen to be a tribal sachem or chief by ones fellow campers. Yesterday evening the five Iroquois nations each met to hold their tribal elections and choose their leaders for the upcoming series of competitions. Each candidate spoke of why he or she would be a strong leader, and then voting was held to determine the entire slate of tribal officers. Jamie Konowitz, sachem of the Onondaga, was honored to be selected, saying that “I’m psyched to have the responsibilities, and I’ve been hoping to be a sachem ever since I was in the Lodge.” New Tuscarora chief Mark Balderston felt the same, noting that he is “very excited, and very proud to be able to help my tribe do its very best.” For a complete list of tribal leaders and Indian competition results, click here.
